Athletes of the Week for March 6, 2023

Women’s Basketball

Natalie Bruns  —  NYU  —  St. Louis, MO (Kirkwood)

NYU junior forward Natalie Bruns, the UAA Women’s Basketball Player of the Year, scored a career-high 29 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead the Violets to a 71-54 win over Greensboro College in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Championship. She added 10 points and five rebounds in a 62-41 victory over host Messiah University in the second round. In two games, Bruns shot 62.1 percent (18-for-29) from the field, while contributing five blocks and four steals.

Men’s Basketball

Cole Frilling  —  Case Western Reserve University —  Coldwater, OH (Coldwater)

Case Western Reserve University senior forward Cole Frilling averaged 14.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game as the Spartans advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III Men’s Basketball Championship. He totaled 20 points and 12 boards in an 82-76 victory over Arcadia University in the opening round on Friday. Frilling hit 13 of 17 free throws in the two contests.

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Emma Kelley  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Webster Groves)

Junior Emma Kelley of Washington University captured the 800-meter run at the Wartburg College Last Chance Invitational. Her time of 2:09.77 earned her the top seed in the NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Susannah Truitt  —  University of Chicago  —  Cary, NC (Panther Creek)

Junior Susannah Truitt broke the University of Chicago pole vault record at Carthage College. Her mark of 3.84 meters ranks ninth in Division III this season and sealed her spot in the NCAA Division III Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Gio Alfred  —  Washington University  —  Mableton, GA (Campbell)

Senior Gio Alfred of Washington University won the 60-meter hurdles at the Wartburg College Last Chance Invitational. His time of 8.11 seconds is tied for ninth this season in Division III and clinched a spot in the NCAA Division III Men’s Indoor Track & Field Championship. 

Baseball

Jack Anderson  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Clarkston, MI (Clarkston)

Case Western Reserve University senior catcher Jack Anderson batted .600 (9-for-15) with five runs scored and five extra-base hits as the Spartans split a pair of doubleheaders. He finished 5-of-8 with a double, triple, and his first career home run against 15th-ranked Marietta College. Anderson added four hits, including a pair of doubles, and scored three times against Washington & Jefferson College.

Aaron Mishoulam  —  Emory University  —  Oak Park, IL (Oak Park and River Forest)

Emory University senior right-handed pitcher Aaron Mishoulam tossed seven shutout innings in a 7-2 win over Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology. He yielded only three singles, walked one, and struck out eight.

Softball

Carli Tucci  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  River Forest, IL (Oak Park & River Forest)

Case Western Reserve University senior designated hitter Carli Tucci batted .700 (7-for-10) with four runs scored and six runs batted in as the Spartans opened the season 4-0 at the Grand Slam Triangle Classic in Raleigh, North Carolina. She began the year with a double and home run in a 3-1 win over Huntingdon College, and also recorded multiple hits in wins over Averett University and Arcadia University. Tucci went 1-for-2 with a walk and one RBI as the Spartans upended top-ranked Christopher Newport University, 3-2, on Sunday.

Lexi Miskey  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Pittsford, NY (Pittsford Mendon)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore pitcher Lexi Miskey posted a 2-0 record and 1.50 earned run average with a pair of complete game outings. She gave up one run and struck out 10 in the Spartans’ 3-1 win over Huntingdon College, which entered the game with an 11-1 record, on Saturday. The following day, Miskey tossed a five-hitter with nine strikeouts in a 3-2 victory over top-ranked Christopher Newport University.

Women’s Tennis

Nicole Geller  —  University of Chicago  —  Jurmala, Latvia (Laurel Springs School)

Sophomore Nicole Geller finished a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles to help lead University of Chicago to its second consecutive ITA Division III National Women’s Team Indoor Championship title. Playing No. 3 singles, she earned a super breaker win over Crystal Zhou of Carnegie Mellon University in the Maroons’ 7-1 win in the first round, and then dropped a combined six games in four sets in victories over Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (8-1) in the semifinals and top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (5-1) in the final. Geller and Lauren Khou finished 2-1 at No. 3 doubles, only dropping a tiebreaker against the Athenas.

Men’s Tennis

Phuc Huynh  —  Washington University  —  Honolulu, HI (Iolani)

Graduate student Phuc Huynh finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles in Washington University wins over University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and DePauw University. He dropped a total of two games in four sets in singles, playing No. 2 against UW-Whitewater and No. 1 against DePauw. Huynh teamed with Abhi Ramireddy for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
