Athletes of the Week for March 13, 2023

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Annika Urban  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Emory University senior Annika Urban became the first Eagles’ competitor to win a national indoor championship at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. She broke the NCAA Division III championship record by winning the mile in 4:43.17. Urban added a third-place finish in the 3,000-meter run in a time of 9:32.05 to lead the Eagles to 12th place in the team standings.

Emma Kelley  —  Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Webster Groves)

Washington University junior Emma Kelley posted the fastest time this season in winning the 800-meter run title at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Her time of 2:06.62 broke the program record. Kelley also ran on the Bears’ third-place 1,600-meter relay that finished in 3:46.78.

Liz Barre  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Ithaca, NY (Taft)

Senior Liz Barre became the first national indoor champion in Carnegie Mellon University history when she captured the pentathlon with a program-record 3,873 points at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. She won the high jump (1.70 meters) and broke a program record with a winning leap of 5.69 meters in the long jump. Barre also broke the program record in the 60-meter hurdles with a runner-up time of 8.71 seconds.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Andrew McGovern  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lexington, MA (Lexington)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Andrew McGovern earned All-America recognition at the 2023 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. He placed sixth in the 800-meter run (1:51.69) to earn his first All-America honor.

Simon Dixon  —  University of Chicago  —  Magalia, CA (Paradise)

University of Chicago freshman Simon Dixon garnered All-America honors at the 2023 NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships. He finished third in the shot put with a throw of 17.07 meters.

Wrestling

Cooper Pontelandolfo  —  NYU  —  Marlton, NJ (Kingsway Regional)

Sophomore Cooper Pontelandolfo earned All-America honors for the second consecutive year at the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships, placing sixth at 165 pounds. He defeated the fourth seed from Wartburg College, 3-0 to open the championship. Pontelandolfo earned a 2-1 double overtime victory over his Loras College opponent and a 3-2 decision over his Ohio Northern University foe.

Women’s Golf

Sharon Mun  —  Emory University  —  Duluth, GA (Lambert)

Emory University sophomore Sharon Mun was named the UAA Women’s Golf Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player after helping lead the top-ranked Eagles to their second consecutive Association title. She defeated Tiya Chowdary of NYU (3&2) in the Eagles’ 3-2 semifinal win over the Violets before posting a convincing 5&4 victory over Sense Sangkagoon of Carnegie Mellon University in another 3-2 Eagles’ win in the final.

Men’s Golf

Henry Scavone  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Birmingham, MI (Birmingham Seaholm)

Graduate student Henry Scavone earned UAA Men’s Golf Championship Tournament Most Valuable Player honors as Carnegie Mellon University earned its first Association title since 2009. In the opening round, he defeated Jeffrey Li of University of Rochester (4&3) in a 3-2 Tartans’ victory and then topped Tony Li of Emory, 1-up, in another 3-2 win in the final.

Baseball

Ellis Schwartz  —  Emory University  —  Cherry Hill, NJ (Cherry Hill East)

Senior outfielder Ellis Schwartz batted .444 (8-for-18) with five runs scored and six runs batted in as Emory University won three of five games. He recorded at least one hit in all five games, going 3-for-8 with two runs scored against top-ranked Birmingham-Southern College. Schwartz hit 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in the Eagles’ 6-4 win over Wittenberg University on Wednesday.

Mike Golub  —  Emory University  —  Encino, CA (Harvard-Westlake)

Senior right-handed pitcher Mike Golub of Emory University earned a win and yielded just one unearned run in seven innings over two relief appearances. He earned the victory with 4.1 innings of two-hit shutout relief in an 8-3 Eagles’ 8-3 win over Covenant College and gave up one unearned run and no hits in 2.2 innings of work against top-ranked Birmingham-Southern College.

Matt Lopes  —  Washington University  —  Jupiter, FL (Benjamin School)

Senior hurler Matt Lopes tossed a four-hitter, giving up two unearned runs and four hits, in a 3-2 Washington University victory over Luther College. He did not walk a batter and struck out seven.

Softball

Kira Monji  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  San Diego, CA (Mission Bay)

First-year fielder Kira Monji set a Carnegie Mellon University record with eight consecutive multi-hit games in a 5-3 week for the Tartans. She batted .567 (17-for-30) with 12 runs scored, five extra-base hits, and 11 runs batted in. Monji opened the week by batting 2-for-5 with three runs scored, a double, and two RBI in a 13-11 Tartans’ victory over Johnson & Wales University.

Jamie Burgasser  —  Washington University  —  Oakland, CA (Oakland Technical)

Sophomore pitcher Jamie Burgasser posted a 2-0 record and 2.55 earned run average as Washington University recorded wins over DePauw University and Wartburg College. She tossed a six-hitter with five strikeouts in a 3-1 Bears’ victory over Wartburg.

Women’s Tennis

Josephine Libby  —  University of Rochester  —  Rochester, NY (Pittsford Sutherland)

University of Rochester sophomore Josephine Libby recorded a 3-0 mark at No. 1 singles in a 1-2 week for the Yellowjackets. She earned a three-set win, coming back to take the match against her NCAA Division I opponent from Creighton University, 1-6, 6-3, 10-7. Libby added straight-set victories against opponents from Wittenberg University and Haverford University, dropping only five games in four sets.

Men’s Tennis

Ansh Shah  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Oak Brook, IL (Hinsdale Central)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Ansh Shah finished a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles for the top-ranked Spartans. He dropped just one game at No. 4 singles against Hardin-Simmons University after teaming with James Hopper for an 8-0 victory at No 3 doubles. Facing NCAA Division II nationally ranked Lynn University, Shah earned a 7-6, 7-5 win at fourth singles in a 4-2 Spartans’ victory.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
