Athletes of the Week for March 27, 2023

Baseball

Nick Harms  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  St. Louis, MO (Parkway West)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore outfielder Nick Harms batted .533 (8-for-15) with a 1.267 slugging percentage and a .652 on-base percentage as the Spartans won three of five games. He scored five runs, hit three home runs, and drove in four runs for the week. Harms went 3-for-4 with a double and home run in each game of a doubleheader split with Washington University on Sunday.

Tyler McLoughlin  —  Emory University  —  Milton, GA (Milton)

Emory University junior Tyler McLoughlin batted .563 (9-for-16) with a 1.188 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage in a 3-1 week for the Eagles. He scored three runs, hit four doubles and two home runs, and drove in five runs. McLoughlin hit .600 (6-for-10) with two doubles, a home run, and three RBI in a shortened three-game series against NYU.

Will Henkel  —  Washington University  —  Anderson Township, OH (Turpin)

Washington University sophomore Will Henkel tossed a seven-inning, complete game shutout in the Bears’ 10-0 blanking of Case Western Reserve University to salvage a split on Saturday. He scattered five hits and struck out six.

Women’s Golf

Sharon Mun  —  Emory University  —  Duluth, GA (Lambert)

Sophomore Sharon Mun led Emory University for the fifth consecutive tournament as she turned in a three-round score of 222 (72-76-74) at the Patriot Invitational at Poppy Hills Country Club in Carmel, California. She tied for 10th individually to help lead the Eagles to a sixth-place team finish against a field of primarily NCAA Division II opponents.

Softball

Alex Cohen  —  Brandeis University  —  West Palm Beach, FL (The Benjamin School)

Brandeis University junior Alex Cohen batted .579 (11-for-19) with seven runs scored, three home runs, and 10 runs batted in to help lead the Judges to a 6-0 week, including a four-game sweep of Carnegie Mellon University in their opening UAA series. She broke a 3-3 tie with a three-run home run in an 8-3 Judges’ victory to complete the sweep on Sunday. Cohen hit 3-for-6 with a home run and four RBI in a doubleheader sweep on Friday. 

Katie Gould  —  Washington University  —  El Segundo, CA (Mira Costa)

Washington University infielder Katie Gould hit .714 (10-for-14) with two runs scored as the Bears split their UAA-opening series with NYU. She batted 4-for-6 with a triple and one run batted in during Saturday’s doubleheader before going 6-for-8 with a run scored on Sunday.

Ragini Kannan  —  Brandeis University  —  Westford, MA (Westford Academy)

Brandeis University first-year pitcher Ragini Kamman posted a 4-0 record, yielding just one run in 22 innings of work. She walked two batters and struck out 30. Kannan earned three wins in the Judges’ four-game UAA sweep of Carnegie Mellon University, allowing one run, walking one, and fanning 18 in 16 innings.

Women’s Tennis

Alexa Goetz  —  Emory University  —  Greenlawn, NY (Harborfields)

Senior Alexa Goetz finished a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles to lead Emory University to three wins, including a shutout of 10th-ranked Sewanee: The University of the South. She won all three of her singles matches, two at No. 4 singles and one at No. 6 singles, only dropping more than one game in two of six sets. Goetz teamed with first-year Izzy Antanavicius at second doubles for three victories,

Men’s Tennis

Dylan Walters  —  Brandeis University  —  Baltimore, MD (Gilman School)

Junior Dylan Walters posted a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles in Brandeis University victories over University of Rochester and Skidmore College. Playing No. 1 singles, he posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Krish Vennam of the Yellowjackets, and earned a 6-3, 6-2 win against his Skidmore opponent. Walters teamed with first-year Tommy Harrison for a pair of 8-4 victories at first doubles.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Annika Urban  — Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Senior Annika Urban broke the Emory University record and recorded the fastest time of the early season in NCAA Division III, competing in the 800-meter run for the first time in her collegiate career. Her time of 2:10.15 at the Eagles’ Thrills in the Hills Open is nearly a second faster than the next fastest runner this season.

Ebun Opata  —  Washington University  —  London, England (St. Andrew’s Episcopal)

Junior Ebun Opata swept the triple jump and long jump at the Washington University 5-Way Meet, helping to lead the Bears to the team title. She won the triple jump with a mark of 11.72 meters, which ranks second in NCAA Division III in the early season, and captured the long jump with a leap of 5.31 meters.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Andrew McGovern  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Lexington, MA (Lexington)

Junior Andrew McGovern won the 400-meter hurdles as Carnegie Mellon University hosted its CMU Track & Field Invitational featuring NCAA Division I, II, and III teams. His time of 53.65 seconds ranks second in the early part of the Division III season.

Kenya Sei  —  Emory University  —  Portland, OR (Catlin Gabel)

Junior Kenya Sei of Emory University posted the fifth-best hammer throw of the early NCAA Division III season at the Eagles’ Thrills in the Hills Open. His toss of 52.94 meters in the event ranks second in program history. Sei recorded a distance of 40.87 meters in the discus.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
