Athletes of the Week for March 29, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Jack Anderson  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Clarkston, MI (Clarkston)

Sophomore catcher Jack Anderson batted .545 (6-for-11) with four runs scored and two runs batted in as Case Western Reserve University won all three games he played in. He posted a 1.000 slugging percentage with one double and two triples among his six hits. He went 3-for-5 in his season debut with a double and two RBI in the Spartans’ 9-5 victory over Wittenberg University on Saturday. Anderson finished 3-for-4 with a pair of triples and two runs scored in a 4-3 win over Ohio Wesleyan University in the first game of a doubleheader sweep on Sunday.

Baseball - Pitcher

Jared Fong  —  Washington University  —  Austin, TX (Westlake)

Senior pitcher Jared Fong earned a win and a save, throwing a combined eight shutout innings, as Washington University remained undefeated. He yielded two hits and struck out six in five innings to earn the win in the Bears’ 4-3 victory over fifth-ranked Webster University on Wednesday. Fong returned to the mound on Saturday, tossing three innings of one-hit ball to earn the save in the Bears’ 7-6 triumph over Wabash College.

Women’s Golf

Caraline Oakley  —  Washington University  —  Southampton, NY (Southampton)

Washington University first-year golfer Caraline Oakley placed second in the 47-player field at the Bears’ home invitational. After shooting an opening-round 84 on Sunday, she shot a 75 in the second round on Monday. The Bears finished fourth behind three other ranked teams.

Softball - Hitter

Piper Johnson  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Riverside, CA (Martin Luther King)

Sophomore Piper Johnson batted .600 (6-for-10) with five runs batted in during a 1-3 week for Carnegie Mellon University. She hit two doubles and a triple, recording a 1.000 slugging percentage. Johnson doubled twice and drove in two runs in a 5-0 Tartans’ victory over Penn State Behrend in the first game of a doubleheader, adding a triple and three RBI in the second game. 

Softball - Pitcher

Scotty McGee  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Huntington Beach, CA (Huntington Beach)

Junior pitcher Scotty McGee posted a 1-0 record and did not yield a run in 10.2 innings. She tossed 3.2 innings of one-hit relief with five strikeouts in the Tartans’ 6-1 loss to Geneva College before picking up her first win of the season with a two-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts in a 5-0 victory over Penn State-Behrend. McGee gave up only three hits and struck out 15 in her two appearances.

Women’s Tennis

Pallavi Goculdas  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Cherry Hill, NJ (Cherry Hill East)

Case Western Reserve University first-year player Pallavi Goculdas finished a combined 3-0 record in singles and doubles as the Spartans opened the season with two wins. She recorded a straight set win at No. 3 singles in the Spartans’ 7-2 victory over NAIA University of Northwestern Ohio and then earned victories in singles and doubles in a thrilling 5-4 road win over Denison University. Goculdas teamed with sophomore Nina Hoog to earn the Spartans’ only doubles point, 8-6 at third doubles, and then evened the score at 3-3 with a straight set win at No. 3 singles.

Men’s Tennis

James Hopper  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Montgomery, NJ (Montgomery)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore James Hopper went undefeated in a 1-1 week for the Spartans. He teamed with Jonathan Powell for an 8-3 win at No. 1 doubles and then came back from a one-set deficit to earn a victory at No. 1 singles in the Spartans’ 5-4 loss to NAIA University of Northwestern Ohio. Hopper teamed with Matthew Chen for a win at first doubles and then led 5-2 in the opening set at No. 1 singles before his opponent retired in a shutout of Wittenberg University.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Caira Watson-Haynes  —  Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Washington University senior Caira-Watson Haynes ran the second-fastest 100-meter hurdles time in NCAA Division III this season at the Bears’ home quadrangular. She won the event in 14.61 seconds. The Bears defeated Illinois College, Greenville College, and Webster University.

Eka Jose  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Washington University senior Eka Jose recorded the best triple jump mark in NCAA Division III this season at the Bears’ home quadrangular. She won the event with a leap pf 11.71 meters. The Bears defeated Illinois College, Greenville College, and Webster University.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Harry Branch-Shaw  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  New York, NY (Brooklyn Technical)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Harry Branch-Shaw ran the second-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the 3,000-meter steeplechase as the Tartans hosted the CMU March Invitational. He completed the race in a personal-best time of 9:17.11. The Tartans finished first in the four-team meet.

Joe Stover  —  Washington University  —  Hingham, MA (Boston College HS)

Washington University senior Joe Stover won the 10,000-meter run with the second-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the Bears’ home quadrangular. His winning time was 30:56.61. The Bears defeated Illinois College, Greenville University, and Webster University.

Justin Kiefel  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Downingtown, PA (Downingtown STEM Academy)

Carnegie Mellon University junior Justin Kiefel broke the school record and posted the best triple jump mark in NCAA Division III this season as the Tartans captured the title at the CMU March Invitational. His mark of 14.59 meters broke the previous program mark of 14.21 meters. Kiefel recorded a long jump distance of 7.12 meters, which ranks second in Division III this year.


Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
