Athletes of the Week for April 1, 2019

Baseball

Ryan Adelman — Emory University  —  Short Hills, NJ (Millburn)

Junior Ryan Adelman batted .563 (9-for-16) with 10 runs scored, four doubles, four runs batted in, and four stolen bases in a 4-1 week for Emory University. He posted an .813 slugging percentage and .720 on-base percentage. Adelman scored three runs in each of the final three games of the Eagles’ four-game sweep of Brandeis University, keying the offense that scored 57 runs.

Caleb Durbin — Washington University  —  Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest)

Freshman Caleb Durbin batted .500 (7-for-14) with five runs scored and two runs batted in to help lead Washington University to a 3-0 week, including two wins at Case Western Reserve University. He recorded two hits in each of the wins over the Spartans, 7-5 in the first game of the doubleheader and 2-1 in the nightcap. Durbin hit one double, a triple, and posted a .714 slugging percentage as the Bears ran their winning streak to six games.

Ryan Loutos — Washington University  —  Barrington, IL (Barrington)

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Ryan Loutos allowed one run and struck out 11 batters over six innings of a 2-1 Washington University victory over Case Western Reserve University. He yielded four hits and only one walk.

Men’s Golf

Joseph Burlison — NYU  —  Salinas, CA (Palma)

Freshman Joseph Burlison finished second of 60 golfers at the NYU Spring Invitational. He shot an even-par 71 on Saturday and followed with a 75 on Sunday to finish one stroke behind the individual champion. The Violets placed second in the 12-team competition.

Softball

Sami Feller — Emory University  —  Coral Springs, FL (Stoneman Douglas)

Emory University junior outfielder Sami Feller batted .500 (9-for-18) with eight runs scored and five runs batted in as the Eagles finished the week 6-0. She recorded three hits in a doubleheader sweep of 13th-ranked Berry College on Wednesday and registered two hits in each of the final three games of the Eagles’ four victories over Carnegie Mellon University to open UAA play.

Diana King — NYU  —  Rye, NY (Rye Neck)

NYU senior centerfielder Diana King batted .522 (12-for-23) with seven runs scored and three runs batted in to help lead the Violets to a 4-2 week. She doubled, homered, and drove in three runs in a 10-9 win over Rutgers University-Newark on Tuesday, and finished 3-for-7 with two runs scored in a doubleheader split at Case Western Reserve University on Friday.

Karissa Zubulake — NYU  —  Whitehouse Station, NJ (Hunterdon Central Regional)

NYU senior pitcher Karissa Zubulake posted a 3-0 record and a 1.40 earned run average, allowing four earned runs in 20 innings. She struck out 11 batters in six innings of a 6-2 win over Rutgers University-Newark on Tuesday and fanned seven without a walk in a 3-1 victory at Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday. Zubulake scattered six hits to pick up the win as the Violets defeated host Case Western Reserve University, 4-2, in the opening game of a doubleheader on Friday.

Women’s Tennis

Madeleine Paolucci — Case Western Reserve University  —  Grosse Pointe Farms, MI (Grosse Pointe S.)

Sophomore Madeleine Paolucci finished a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles in three matches for Case Western Reserve University. She won in straight sets at No. 1 singles and teamed with sophomore Nicole Cardwell for a victory at first doubles in the Spartans’ loss to 11th-ranked Kenyon College.

Daniela Lopez — Emory University  —  Coral Gables, FL (Ransom Everglades)

Daniela Lopez celebrated Senior Day with a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles as Emory University recorded back-to-back 9-0 wins over DePauw University and 22nd-ranked Washington and Lee University. She earned wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, and teamed with rookie Emma Cartledge for a pair of doubles victories.

Men’s Tennis

Charlie Pei —  University of Chicago  —  San Diego, CA (Torrey Pines)

University of Chicago senior Charlie Pei finished a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles as the Maroons posted a 2-1 record against three teams ranked in the top-14 in NCAA Division III. He earned wins at
No. 3 singles in 5-4 victories over sixth-ranked Williams College and 14th-ranked Pomona-Pitzer Colleges. Pei and freshman Joshua Xu won all three of their matches at third doubles, including an 8-7 (7-5) win over their opponents from fourth-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson  — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Brandeis University senior Emily Bryson ran a personal-best time and the top NCAA Division III time this season in the 1,500-meter run at the Raleigh Relays hosted by North Carolina State University. Her time of 4:28.65 is the fastest in Division III by 1.34 seconds.

Cassandra Laios  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)

Case Western Reserve University graduate student Cassandra Laios broke her previous program records in the hammer throw and the shot put at the Carnegie Mellon University Quad Meet.  Her toss of 54.16 meters in the hammer broke her previous mark of 52.48, and her distance of 13.48 meters in the shot put topped her record of 13.29. Laios holds the top mark in NCAA Division III in the hammer throw and ranks fourth in the shot put.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Nick  Matteucci  — Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Washington University junior Nick Matteucci ran a personal-best time and the second-fastest time in program history in the 5,000-meter run at the Bears’ Distance Carnival on Friday. His time of 14:27.14 ranks second in NCAA Division III this season.

Bram Miller  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Colgate, WI (Kettle Moraine Lutheran)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Bram Miller won the discus and shot put to help lead the Tartans to the team title at their annual quad meet on Saturday. He bettered his program record in the discus by 0.73 meters with a toss of 49.78 meters, and won the shot put with a career-best throw of 16.14 meters. Miller ranks fourth in NCAA Division III in the shot put and fifth in the discus.
 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
