Athletes of the Week for April 5, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Benjamin Stawicki  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Aurora, OH (Aurora)

Case Western Reserve University senior outfielder Benjamin Stawicki batted .474 (9-for-19) with five runs scored, nine runs batted in, and a 1.105 slugging percentage in the Spartans’ 4-2 week. He recorded seven extra-base hits with four doubles, a triple, and two home runs. Stawicki went 5-for-9 with four extra-base hits and six RBI as the Spartans swept Wittenberg University on Sunday.

Baseball - Pitcher

Ryan Loutos  —  Washington University  —  Barrington, IL (Barrington)

Washington University senior pitcher Ryan Loutos yielded one earned run on five hits over eight innings as the second-ranked Bears defeated fifth-ranked Aurora University, 3-2, in a matchup of undefeated teams. He walked one batter and struck out 12, the third time this season he has fanned 12 or more in a start.

Women’s Golf

Mariana Chong  —  Emory University  —  Lima, Peru (Colegio Villa Caritas)

First-year golfer Mariana Chong of Emory University tied for seventh place overall in the 40-player field at the Golfweek DIII Spring Invitational. She shot rounds of 79-80-79 for a 238 total over 54 holes at the El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howie-in-the-Hills, Florida. The Eagles finished fourth in the eight-team event.

Men’s Golf

Jason Li  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Sewickley, PA (Sewickley Academy)

Senior Jason Li of Carnegie Mellon University captured his first collegiate medalist honor at the Golfweek DIII Spring Invitational as the Tartans placed fourth in the 12-team event. He shot a two-under par 214 (69-75-70) on the El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howie-in-the-Hills, Florida course and led the 60-player field with 14 birdies.

Softball - Hitter

Sarah Miller  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Lorain, OH (Marion L. Steele)

Case Western Reserve University senior shortstop Sarah Miller batted .462 (6-for-13) with eight runs scored, four home runs, and nine runs batted in during the Spartans’ 4-0 week. She finished 4-for-7 with four runs scored and a home run in each game of a doubleheader sweep of University of Rio Grande on Tuesday. Miller hit a pair of homers and drove in five runs in a 14-0 Spartans’ blanking of Bluffton College in the first game of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

Softball - Pitcher

Scotty McGee  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Huntington Beach, CA (Huntington Beach)

Carnegie Mellon junior pitcher Scotty McGee tossed a complete game one-hit shutout in the Tartans’ 7-0 victory over Mount Aloysius College on Tuesday. She struck out a career-high 15 batters in moving to 2-0 this season.

Women’s Tennis

Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico  —  Emory University  —  Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Preparatory)

Senior Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico earned two wins in a 6-1 Emory University loss to NCAA Division I Georgia Southern University. She teamed with Katie Chang for a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles (the Eagles lost the doubles point) and then rallied for a 3-6, 7-6 (4), 10-7 win at No. 1 singles.

Men’s Tennis

James Hopper  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Montgomery, NJ (Montgomery)

Sophomore James Hopper claimed a pair of victories in a 4-3 Case Western Reserve University loss to NCAA Division I Cleveland State University. He teamed with Matthew Chen for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles before securing a 7-5, 6-3 victory at No. 1 doubles. Hopper improved to 5-0 in singles and doubles this season.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Lauren Cunild  —  Emory University  —  Northants, UK (Northampton)

Emory University junior Lauren Cunild posted a season-best time in the 800 meters and helped the Eagles turn in a season-best performance in the 1,600-meter relay at the UAB Spring Invitational. Her time of 2:15.89 in the 800 ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season. The Eagles’ relay posted a time of 4:07.00.

Eka Jose  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Washington University senior Eka Jose recorded the third-best triple jump mark in NCAA Division III this season as the Bears competed against University of Chicago and host North Central College. Her winning mark was 11.82 meters.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Andrew Whitaker  —  Washington University  —  West Chester, OH (Lakota West)

Senior Andrew Whitaker swept the hurdles events as Washington University defeated University of Chicago and host North Central College. His winning time of 14.56 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles tied him for the third-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season. Whitaker posted the 13th-best time in NCAA Division III this season when he captured the 400-meter hurdles in 55.08 seconds.

Alexander Scott  —  University of Chicago  —  Plover, WI (Stevens Point Area)

Senior Alexander Scott recorded the best shot put mark in NCAA Division III this season as University of Chicago competed at North Central College with Washington University. He won the event by nearly four meters with a throw of 16.96 meters, breaking the nearly 30-year-old program record of 16.45 meters set by Neal Cawi in 1992.
