Athletes of the Week for April 8, 2019

Baseball

Evan Nagel — Washington University  —  Garden City, NY (Regis)

Washington University senior Evan Nagel batted .444 (8-for-18) with four runs scored, four extra-base hits, and seven runs batted in during the Bears’ 5-0 week. He posted a .722 slugging percentage and .524 on-base percentage, adding three stolen bases. Nagel scored the game-tying run in the ninth inning and drove in the game-winner in the Bears’ 10-inning 4-3 win over host Brandeis University.

Nick Denove — Case Western Reserve University  —  Naples, FL (Barron Collier)

Case Western Reserve University freshman Nick Denove threw a complete-game shutout in a 6-0 win over NYU in the second game of the Spartans’ doubleheader sweep on Saturday. He limited the Violets to five hits and two walks, throwing just 91 pitches and allowing only one runner past second base.

Women’s Golf

Emily Carnes — Washington University  —  Arlington Heights, IL (Buffalo Grove)

Junior Emily Carnes tied for 14th place to help lead ninth-ranked Washington University to a third-place finish at the Bears’ 15-team spring invitational. She posted back-to-back scores of 78, totaling 20 pars and shooting one-under par on par five holes.

Men’s Golf

Matt Organisak — Emory University  —  Sudbury, MA (Lincoln-Sudbury Regional)

Junior Matt Organisak shot a one-under par 141 over 36 holes to help Emory University to a runner-up finish at the Wynlakes Invitational. He and sophomore teammate Eric Yiu tied for second place individually in the 83-player field. Organisak shot rounds of 72 and 71, marking the 12th and 13th times in 19 rounds this season in which he shot par or better.

Softball

Mattie Ryan — Emory University  —  Atlanta, GA (Marist)

Emory University first-year first baseman Mattie Ryan batted .455 (5-for-11) with four runs scored, three home runs, and eight runs batted in as the Eagles won three of four games at Washington University. She homered twice and drove in four runs in the Eagles’ 9-0 victory over the Bears in the first game of the doubleheader on Sunday and added another home run and four RBI in a 13-3 win in the second game. 

Scottie Todd — Brandeis University  —  Tampa, FL (Strawberry Crest)

Brandeis University junior pitcher Scottie Todd posted a 3-0 record and a 1.00 earned run average, while adding the biggest hit of a 5-0-1 week as the Judges remained unbeaten in 16 games. She tossed three complete games, a 4-2 win over Wellesley College and a pair of 3-1 wins over NYU, yielding a total of 15 hits. Todd hit a two-out, three-run home run to break a 3-3 tie and lead the Judges to a 6-3 win in the second game on Sunday to seal a four-game sweep of the Violets.

Women’s Tennis

Keren Khromchenko — Brandeis University  —  Manalapan, NJ (Academy of Allied Health & Science)

Senior Keren Khromchenko finished a combined 6-0 in singles and doubles as 18th-ranked Brandeis University won three matches, two against higher-ranked teams. She teamed with junior Diana Dehterevich for three wins at No. 2 doubles and took all her third singles matches, including two in super-tiebreakers. The Judges shut out Wellesley College before upending 15th-ranked NYU and 13th-ranked Skidmore College by identical 6-3 scores.

Jessica Fatemi — Emory University  —  Potomac, MD (Walter Johnson)

First-year player Jessica Fatemi ran her singles winning streak to 14 consecutive matches with a pair of straight-set wins at No. 5 singles. She earned a 6-3, 6-1 triumph as the top-ranked Eagles defeated seventh-ranked Tufts University, 6-3, and won 6-0, 6-3 in a loss to fifth-ranked Middlebury College. She also teamed with Emma Cartledge for an 8-2 second doubles victory over Tufts.

Men’s Tennis

James Spaulding —  Emory University  —  Winnetka, IL (New Trier)

Senior James Spaulding picked up a pair of wins to lead third-ranked Emory University to a 6-3 win at second-ranked Middlebury College. He teamed with Will Wanner for an 8-3 triumph at No. 2 doubles, their 13th win in 14 matches this season. Spaulding earned a 6-2, 6-3 victory at sixth singles to push the Eagles’ lead to 4-0.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Caira Watson Haynes  — Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Sophomore Caira Watson Haynes ran a personal-best time in the 100-meter hurdles to help Washington University place second at the Division I St. Louis University Billiken Invitational on Saturday. Her second-place time of 14.33 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles ranks third in NCAA Division III this season. Haynes added a win in the 100-meter dash in 12.43 seconds.

Cassandra Laios  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)

Graduate student Cassandra Laios broke her Case Western Reserve University record in the hammer throw at the Bob Kahn Invitational in Oberlin, Ohio. Her mark of 54.52 meters ranks first in NCAA Division III this season. Laios added a first-place finish in the shot put (13.37 meters) and placed second in the discus (40.19 meters).

Eka Jose  — Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Sophomore Eka Jose of Washington University registered the top NCAA Division III triple jump this season at the Division I St. Louis University Billiken Invitational on Saturday. She finished second in the event with a leap of 12.00 meters. Jose placed fourth in the long jump (4.31 meters).

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

John Harry Wagner  — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)

Sophomore John Harry Wagner helped lead Washington University to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division I St. Louis University Billiken Invitational. He placed first in the 400-meter run (48.07 seconds) and ran on the winning 400-meter relay (43.43 seconds). Wagner now ranks fourth in Division III in the 400.

Dominic Oddo  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Mentor, OH (Mentor)

Junior Dominic Oddo of Case Western Reserve University placed first in the decathlon at the 2019 Outdoor All-Ohio Combined Event Championships hosted by Muskingum University. His total of 6,097 points ranks sixth in NCAA Division III this season. Oddo earned four first-place finishes and added two second-place performances.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
