Athletes of the Week for April 17, 2023
Baseball
Zack Carinci — Case Western Reserve University — Twinsburg, OH (Twinsburg)
Junior third baseman Zack Carinci batted .471 (8-for-17) with eight runs scored as Case Western Reserve University swept a four-game UAA series at NYU. He scored five runs in Friday’s doubleheader sweep and then hit 6-for-11 with four runs batted in during Sunday’s doubleheader sweep. Carinci recorded at least one hit in all five games during the week, recording a hit and walk against Oberlin College on Wednesday, and finished the week with a .577 on-base percentage with a pair of doubles.
Sebastian Guzman — Washington University — Garden Grove, CA (Mater Dei)
Sophomore pitcher Sebastian Guzman of Washington University yielded only one run in a seven-inning complete game 11-1 victory over Brandeis University as part of the Bears’ four-game home sweep of the UAA series. He scatted six hits, walked one batter, and struck out five.
Women’s Golf
Sydney Kuo — Washington University — South Plainfield, NJ (The Wardlaw +.Hartridge School)
Washington University sophomore Sydney Kuo tied for first at the Illinois Wesleyan University Spring Fling. She shot rounds of 72 and 74 for a 146 total to share the individual title and lead the Bears to a runner-up team finish.
Men’s Golf
Brian Xu — Carnegie Mellon University — San Diego, CA (Torrey Pines)
Carnegie Mellon University junior Brian Xu placed second individually in a 96-player field at The Visit Florence Intercollegiate played at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail at the Shoals. He opened with an even-par 72 before posting his collegiate-best round of four-under par 68 in round two. Xu carded another even par round to close the event with a 54-hole score of 212.
Softball
Tami Wong — Washington University — Alton, IL (Alton)
Senior Tami Wong batted .533 (8-for-15) with four runs scored and nine runs batted in to help lead Washington University to a four-game UAA sweep at Emory University. She recorded at least one hit in each game, including three hits in each game of a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, hitting 6-for-7 with two doubles, three runs scored, and eight RBI.
Alex Cohen — Brandeis University — West Palm Beach, FL (The Benjamin School)
Junior Alex Cohen of Brandeis University posted a 4-0 record and 1.17 earned run average during the week, including a 2-0 mark with a 1.27 ERA in a home UAA sweep over NYU. She earned non-Association victories over Endicott College and Wellesley University, yielding two runs and seven hits in 13 innings. Against NYU, Cohen gave up two runs and five hits in 11 innings. She did not walk a batter in four games.
Women’s Tennis
Anna Chow — Carnegie Mellon University — Demarest, NJ (Northern Valley Regional)
Carnegie Mellon University first-year player Anna Chow finished a combined 3-0 in singles and doubles in a pair of wins on Sunday, including the Tartans’ first victory over NCAA Division I Duquesne University since 2014. She teamed with Zoe Angell for a pair of wins at No. 3 doubles, first in a 9-0 blanking of Allegheny College and then to secure the first point against Duquesne. Chow earned the first singles point against the Dukes with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 singles.
Men’s Tennis
Sachin Das — University of Chicago — McLean, VA (Landon School. MD)
University of Chicago senior Sachin Das finished a combined 3-0 in singles and doubles as the Maroons toppled NCAA Division I Chicago State University and second-ranked rival Washington University. He teamed with Andrei Leonov at No. 2 doubles for a 6-3 win against Chicago State and an 8-4 victory over the Bears’ duo of Gaurav Singh and Scott Yamamoto. Das dropped the first set to Singh, 6-2, at No. 4 singles before winning the final two sets, 6-0, 6-1.
Women’s Outdoor Track and Field
Annika Urban — Emory University — Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)
Emory University senior Annika Urban ran the third-fastest 5,000-meter run in NCAA Division III history at the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University. Her time of 16:06.95 bested the previous program record by nearly 40 seconds and is almost 20 seconds faster than any other Division III competitor this season.
Jenae Bothe — Washington University — Oregon, IL (Oregon)
Washington University first-year thrower Jenae Bothe broke the program record in the shot put at the Greenville College Select. Her mark of 13.38 meters ranks 22nd in NCAA Division III this season.
Men’s Outdoor Track and Field
Elijah Sech — Carnegie Mellon University — San Clemente, CA (San Clemente)
Carnegie Mellon University senior Elijah Sech broke the 24-year program record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, placing fifth (second among NCAA Division III runners) at the Bucknell University Bison Outdoor Classic. His time of 9:03.87 broke Kristo Kriechabaum’s 1999 record of 9:04.98. Sech’s time ranks sixth in Division III this season.
Abayomi Awoyomi — Washington University — Brooklyn, NY (Saint Ann’s School)
Washington University senior Abayomi Awoyomi broke the program record in capturing the triple jump at the Greenville College Select. His mark of 14.81 meters ranks fourth in NCAA Division III this season.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
