Athletes of the Week for April 22, 2019

Baseball

Jake Ryan — Case Western Reserve University  —  Chatham, IL (Glenwood)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore outfielder/catcher Jake Ryan hit three home runs and drove in four to help lead the Spartans to a 21-10 rout of 11th-ranked College of Wooster. He finished the game 4-for-4 with five runs scored and a double. Ryan added a hit and a run batted in during the Spartans’ 8-1 victory over Heidelberg College.

John Brinkman — Washington University  —  Worden, IL (St. Louis University)

Washington University junior John Brinkman batted .583 (7-for-12) with three runs scored, two doubles, a home run, and eight runs batted as the Bears swept a four-game series against Emory University to clinch the UAA baseball title. He recorded at least one hit and one RBI in each game, finishing 3-for-3 with two runs scored, two doubles, and one RBI in a 3-2 Bears’ win in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader. Brinkman finished the weekend with a .737 on-base percentage and 1.000 slugging percentage.

John Howard — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (Clayton)

Washington University pitcher John Howard earned his eighth victory in as many decisions in a four-game sweep of Emory University. The senior yielded three hits in seven shutout innings with two walks and five strikeouts in an 8-1 victory over the Eagles on Friday. Howard lowered his career earned run average to 1.84, which currently ranks second in Bears’ history.

Women’s Golf

Navika Kuchakulla — NYU  —  Orlando, FL (Lake Highland Prep)

Sophomore Navika Kuchakulla placed third individually to help lead NYU to a runner-up finish at the Vassar College Invitational. She posted a two-round score of 150 (78-72), recording the top second-round score by three strokes.

Men’s Golf

Eric Yiu — Emory University  —  Shenzhen, Guandong, China (Windermere Prep, FL)

Sophomore Eric Yiu tied for sixth place in the 82-player field with a 54-round score of 216 at the Emory University Discover DeKalb Spring Invitational. His opening-round 70 marked the 11th time this season in 22 rounds he has posted a score of par or better. The Eagles finished second with a team score of 878.

Softball

Sami Feller — Emory University  —  Coral Springs, FL (Stoneman Douglas)

Emory University junior outfielder Sami Feller batted .688 (11-for-16) with two runs scored, four doubles, a home run, and five runs batted in as the Eagles won three of four games at Case Western Reserve University. She finished 2-for-3 with two RBI as Emory scored eight runs with two outs in the seventh inning to complete a doubleheader sweep, 9-7, on Saturday. Feller hit 4-for-5 with a double and home run in a 10-7 Eagles’ win in the first game on Sunday.

Sydney Goldman — Brandeis University  —  Sherman Oaks, CA (Notre Dame)

Brandeis University first-year pitcher Sydney Goldman posted a 4-0 record with a 1.27 earned run average and 24 strikeouts in 22 innings in four appearances. She struck out a season-high 11 batters and tossed her first shutout in a 9-0 win over Clark University on Tuesday and tossed three innings of shutout relief in a victory over Worcester State University the following day. Goldman earned a pair of wins at Carnegie Mellon University, yielding two runs in each of two complete games.

Karissa Zubulake — NYU  —  Whitehouse Station, NJ (Hunterdon Central)

NYU senior pitcher Karissa Zubulake posted a 2-0 record and did not allow an earned run in 12 innings as the Violets swept a three-game series against visiting Washington University. She tossed five scoreless innings in a 5-3 Violets’ win on Friday, then threw a three-hitter yielding no earned runs in a 4-3 win on Sunday.

Women’s Tennis

Divya Sharma — Washington University  —  Charlotte, NC (Hilton Head Prep)

Washington University first-year player Divya Sharma finished 3-0 combined in singles and doubles as the Bears won three matches in four days. She earned straight-set victories at No. 2 singles against University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and Centre College. Sharma and junior Sanjna Tripathy combined for a 7-5 win at second doubles against NCAA Division II University of Missouri-St. Louis on Wednesday.

Men’s Tennis

Jonathan Jemison — Emory University  —  Marietta, GA (Lassiter)

Emory University senior Jonathan Jemison finished a combined 3-0 in singles and doubles as the Eagles topped two regional opponents. He teamed with classmate Adrien Bouchet for a pair of wins at No. 1 doubles in wins over 19th-ranked University of the South and Washington & Lee University. Jemison recorded a 6-3, 7-5 victory at first singles against a former Emory teammate at W&L.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson  — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Senior Emily Bryson set her third Brandeis University record, this time in the 1,500-meter run against a field of mostly NCAA Division I competitors. She lowered the previous school mark by more than five seconds to 4:23.02, which was just outside the all-time Division III top-10 and is four seconds clear of the next-best time in Division III this season.

Julia Dannenbaum  — Washington University  —  Summit, NJ (The Pingry School)

Sophomore Julia Dannenbaum cleared a height of 3.87 meters in the pole vault at the Dewey Allgood Invitational hosted by Missouri University of Science & Technology. Her height would rank fourth in NCAA Division III this season if her personal-best mark of 3.90 meters did not already rank her third.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

John Harry Wagner  — Washington University  —  St. Louis, MO (John Burroughs)

Washington University sophomore John Harry Wagner posted the eighth-fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the 800-meter run (1:52.75) at the Dewey Allgood Invitational hosted by Missouri University of Science & Technology. He claimed first in the event in which a trio of Bears recorded top-25 Division III times. Wagner also anchored the Bears’ winning 1,600-meter relay team, whose time of 3:14.68 ranks second in Division III this season.

Bram Miller  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Colgate, WI (Kettle Moraine Lutheran)

Sophomore Bram Miller of Carnegie Mellon University won the shot put and the discus at the Slippery Rock University Open. His toss of 50.08 meters in the discus broke his own program record of 49.05 meters set last season and ranks him ninth in Division III this season. Miller won the shot put with a mark of 15.85 meters.

They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
