Athletes of the Week for May 6, 2019

Baseball

Colman Hendershot — NYU  —  Lubbock, TX (Coronado)

NYU senior first baseman Colman Hendershot hit .471 (8-for-17) with six runs scored, three extra-base hits, and a .706 slugging percentage in a 3-1 week for the Violets. He recorded multiple hits in three games, including a double, triple, and one run batted in to lead NYU past Stevens Institute of Technology, 14-10.

Ryan Loutos — Washington University  —  Barrington, IL (Barrington)

Washington University sophomore right-hander Ryan Loutos tossed a two-hit complete game shutout in the Bears’ 7-0 win over Knox College to complete a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. He finished with a career-high 14 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.

Women’s Golf

Navika Kuchakulla — NYU  —  Orlando, FL (Lake Highland Preparatory School)

Sophomore Navika Kuchakulla earned medalist honors with a two-round score of 152 as NYU earned its fifth consecutive berth in the NCAA Division III Women’s Golf Championship, topping a seven-team field. Her one-over par 74 in the second round was the lowest of the tournament.

Softball

Nicole Carty — Case Western Reserve University  —  Pittsford, NY (Pittsford Sutherland)

Junior Nicole Carty batted .571 (4-for-7) with two doubles, a home run, and five runs batted in as Case Western Reserve University ended its season with a sweep of Ohio Northern University. She homered and drove in five runs in the Spartans’ 11-3 five-inning victory in the second game of the doubleheader.

Ilissa Hamilton — Case Western Reserve University  —  S. Abington Township, PA (Scranton Preparatory)

Junior Ilissa Hamilton allowed three unearned runs in a complete game effort in a 6-3 Case Western Reserve University win over Ohio Northern University in the first game of a doubleheader sweep on Tuesday. She did not walk a batter and scattered eight hits.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Caira Watson Haynes — Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Sophomore Caira Watson Haynes placed third in the 100-meter hurdles at the Billy Hayes Invitational on Friday in Bloomington, Indiana. Her time of 14.21 seconds ranks second in program history and third in NCAA Division III this season.

Eka Jose — Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Sophomore Eka Jose broke the Washington University record in the triple jump with a mark of 12.19 meters at the Billy Hayes Invitational on Friday in Bloomington, Indiana. Her mark, which broke the previous record of 12.02 meters set in 2008, ranks first in NCAA Division III this season. Jose also placed third in the long jump (5.75 meters), which ranks second in program history and sixth in Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Nick Matteucci — Washington University  —  Des Peres, MO (Parkway South)

Junior Nick Matteucci ran to a Washington University record in the 1,500 meters in a time of 3:45.69 at the Billy Hayes Invitational on Friday in Bloomington, Indiana. The lone Division III competitor in the race, he placed fifth and broke his own program record by .17 seconds, posting the top NCAA Division III time this season.

Scott Grote — Brandeis University  —  Greenfield, MA (Greenfield)

Senior Scott Grote of Brandeis University won the New England Division III title in the discus at Williams College. He eclipsed 50 meters for the first time in his career (50.10) on his final throw, which ranks him 13th in NCAA Division III this season. He added a personal-best in the hammer throw with a distance of 47.11 meters.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
