Athletes of the Week for May 10, 2021

Baseball - Hitter

Caleb Durbin  —  Washington University  —  Lake Forest, IL (Lake Forest)

Junior Caleb Durbin of top-ranked Washington University hit for the cycle in the first game of the Bears’ doubleheader sweep at DePauw University. He scored five times and drove in four runs in the first game, adding a walk. In the nightcap, Durbin contributed a hit, run scored, RBI, and two stolen bases in a 4-3 Bears’ win. He finished the doubleheader 5-for-7 with six runs scored, three extra-base hits, and five RBI.

Baseball - Pitcher

Jared Fong  —  Washington University  —  Austin, TX (Westlake)

Senior Jared Fong earned the win with 3.2 innings of scoreless relief as top-ranked Washington University completed a sweep of host DePauw University with a 4-3 victory in the second game. He allowed four hits without a walk and struck out three to lower his season earned run average to 0.51.

Women’s Tennis

Nicole Cardwell  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Westerville, OH (Westerville Central)

Senior Nicole Cardwell earned a pair of wins in doubles as Case Western Reserve University split two matches on Friday. She and first-year teammate Pallavi Goculdas earned the Spartans’ lone point against UAA rival Carnegie Mellon University, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles. Cardwell and Goculdas posted an 8-3 victory at No. 1 doubles in a 6-0 victory over Franciscan University.

Men’s Tennis

Anupreeth Coramutla  —  Brandeis University  —  Monroe Township, NJ (Phillips Andover, MA)

Senior Anupreeth Coramutla earned a pair of wins to lead Brandeis University to a 7-2 win over NCAA Division II Franklin Pierce University. He teamed with junior Colt Tegtmeier for an 8-3 victory at first doubles and then earned a 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles that gave the Judges a 4-2 lead.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Devin Hiltunen  —  Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Junior Devin Hiltunen of Brandeis University ran a season-best time of 25.98 seconds in the 200-meter run and posted a preliminary time of 12.52 seconds in the 100 dash at the Tufts University Invitational on Saturday. She also anchored the team’s season-best showing in the 1,600-meter relay that finished in a time of 4:09.93.

Caira Watson-Haynes  —  Washington University  —  Chicago, IL (St. Ignatius College Prep)

Senior Caira Watson-Haynes of Washington University ran a season-best time of 14.29 seconds in the preliminaries of the 100-meter hurdles at the Indiana State University Pacesetters Invitational on Friday. Her time ranks eighth in NCAA Division III this season. Watson-Haynes posted a time of 26.02 seconds in the 200 meters.

Eka Jose  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Liberty North)

Senior Eka Jose of Washington University recorded a jump of 11.80 meters in the triple jump at the Indiana State University Pacesetters Invitational on Friday. She currently ranks fifth in NCAA Division III this season with her previous mark of 11.82 meters.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Andrew Whitaker  —  Washington University  —  West Chester, OH (Lakota West)

Senior Andrew Whitaker of Washington University recorded a pair of personal bests at the Indiana State University Pacesetter Sports Invitational on Friday. His time of 14.28 seconds in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles ranks third in NCAA Division III this season, while his time of 53.91 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles ranks 11th. Whitaker also ran on the 1,600-meter relay that finished in 3:17.25, which ranks 18th in Division III this year.

Justin Kiefel  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Downington, PA (Downington STEM Academy)

Junior Justin Kiefel of Carnegie Mellon University broke two program records at the West Virginia University Last Chance Meet on Saturday. He won the long jump with a mark of 7.36 meters, breaking the 28-year-old record of 7.29 meters set by Kenny Pugh in 1993. Kiefel broke his own record in the triple jump with a leap of 14.79 meters. He currently ranks third in NCAA Division III in the long jump and fifth in the triple jump.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
