Athletes of the Week for May 13, 2019

Baseball

Cooper Halpern — NYU  —  Pacific Palisades, CA (Crossroads School for Arts and Science)

Senior Cooper Halpern of NYU finished 3-for-5 with two runs batted in as the Violets ended their season with a 6-5, extra-inning loss to regionally ranked Ramapo College on Saturday. He singled and scored to key a three-run rally in the ninth inning that sent the game into extra innings.

Women’s Tennis

Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico — Emory University  —  Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Prep)

Emory University sophomore Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico finished 2-0 in doubles and added a clinching point in singles as the Eagles advanced to NCAA Division III Women’s Tennis Championship quarterfinal round for the 12th consecutive year.

Men’s Tennis

Bernardo Neves — Washington University  —  Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (Colegio pH)

Washington University posted a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles as the Bears won two matches to advance to the NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship quarterfinals for the 13th consecutive year. He dropped a total of four games in two wins at No. 2 singles.

Women’s Outdoor Track and Field

Emily Bryson — Brandeis University  —  Quincy, MA (North Quincy)

Brandeis University senior Emily Bryson won the 1,500-meter run at the New England All-Division Championships, defeating a handful of NCAA Division I competitors. Her time of 4:25.19 was two seconds faster than the runner-up and was the second-fastest time in Division III this season, behind only her program-record time of 4:23.02.

Cassandra Laios — Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)

Case Western Reserve University graduate student Cassandra Laios broke program records in the hammer throw and discus at the Baldwin Wallace University Harrison Dillard Twilight on Friday. Her mark of 55.96 seconds broke her own mark of 55.05 meters, and she broke the 2007 record (44.02 meters) in the discus with a throw of 45.11 meters.

Heidi Nassos — Washington University  —  Wheaton, IL (Wheaton Warrenville South)

Washington University senior Heidi Nassos won the pole vault and the triple jump with personal-best marks at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational. She became the second woman in Bears’ history to clear 13 feet in the pole vault with a mark of 3.97 meters, and leapt 12.05 meters in the triple jump. Nassos’ pole vault ranks second and triple jump ranks third in NCAA Division III this season.

Men’s Outdoor Track and Field

Jack Sebok — Washington University  —  Plainfield, IL (Plainfield North)

Washington University junior Jack Sebok ran to a personal-best time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the North Central College Dr. Keeler Invitational. His time of 9:03.32 ranks fifth in NCAA Division III this season.

Jack Allan — Brandeis University  —  Wrentham, MA (King Phillip Regional)

Brandeis University junior Jack Allan earned All-New England All-Division honors in the decathlon with an eighth-place finish. He became the first man in program history to eclipse 6,000 points with a mark of 6,121. Allan set personal-bests in the javelin, pole vault, and the 1,500-meter run.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
