Athletes of the Week for September 4, 2018
Women’s Cross Country
Sophia Elgamal — University of Chicago — Windsor, CT (Loomis Chaffee School)
Sophomore Sophia Elgamal topped the 109-runner field by six seconds at the season-opening University of St. Francis Twilight Invitational. She recorded a five-kilometer time of 18:20.5 to lead the Maroons to the team title in the 14-team event.
Men’s Cross Country
Henry Myers — University of Chicago — Portland, OR (Franklin)
Freshman Henry Myers earned the individual win in his collegiate debut in the 139-runner field at the University of St. Francis Twilight Invitational. He posted a five-kilometer time of 15:40.5 to lead the Maroons to the team title in the 13-team meet.
Football – Offense
Justin Phan — Case Western Reserve University — Atlanta, GA (Greater Atlanta Christian)
Case Western Reserve University senior wide receiver Justin Phan came just one reception shy of matching his own program single-game record during the 22nd-ranked Spartans’ 38-10 win over University of Rochester to open the season on Saturday. He caught 14 passes for 116 yards while playing just three quarters. Phan caught 10 or more passes for the third time in his career and eclipsed the 100-yard mark for the fourth time.
Football – Defense
Patrick Crossey — Case Western Reserve University — Pittsburgh, PA (Plum Senior)
Case Western Reserve University junior safety Patrick Crossey helped key a strong defensive effort for the 22nd-ranked Spartans in their season-opening 38-10 victory over University of Rochester. He finished the game with six solo tackles and a career-high three pass breakups. Crossey helped the defense limit the Yellowjackets to just 248 yards of total offense, including 40 on the ground.
Football – Special Teams
Dan Diaz — University of Rochester — Wyckoff, NJ (Ramapo)
University of Rochester sophomore wide receiver Dan Diaz returned five kickoffs for 77 yards and a punt for five yards in the Yellowjackets’ 38-10 loss at 22nd-ranked Case Western Reserve University. He added two catches for 36 yards.
Women’s Golf
Samantha Haubenstock — Washington University — Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)
Washington University junior Samantha Haubenstock finished atop the leaderboard in the Bears’ season-opening win over fifth-ranked NAIA William Woods University in the I-70 Dual on Saturday. She carded a two-over par 74 to help secure the first win of head coach Mary Swanson’s career with the Bears.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Maddie Peña — NYU — Pasadena, CA (Mayfield Senior School)
Senior midfielder Maddie Peña scored two goals and added a pair of assists as NYU began the season with wins over St. Joseph’s College (Long Island) and Vassar College. She tallied twice and assisted on the other goal in a 3-0 win over St. Joseph’s and contributed an assist in a 5-1 victory over Vassar.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Maggie Crist — Washington University — Wayzata, MN (Minnetonka)
Senior midfielder Maggie Crist anchored the Washington University defense that posted a pair of shutouts on the road to open the 2018 season. The Bears allowed a combined five shots with only one on goal in a 3-0 win over 22nd-ranked Loras College and a 2-0 blanking of Augsburg University.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Moustafa Khattab — Emory University — Toronto, ONT (Toronto French School)
Senior Moustafa Khattab was named the Most Valuable Player of the Emory University Sonny Carter Invitational after leading the eighth-ranked Eagles to two wins for the tournament title. He scored once and assisted on the other goal in the Eagles’ 2-0 win over Hardin-Simmons University and netted an overtime goal to cap a dramatic 5-4 win over 14th-ranked Washington & Lee University.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Patrick Conway — University of Rochester — Acton, MA (Acton-Boxborough)
Senior goalkeeper Patrick Conway, making his first starts since 2016, posted back-to-back shutouts as University of Rochester defeated Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1-0 in double overtime) and St. John Fisher College (2-0). He made five saves against the Engineers and stopped two shots against the Cardinals.
Volleyball
Emma Bartlett — Brandeis University — Duxbury, MA (Duxbury)
Brandeis University junior middle hitter Emma Bartlett hit .365 and averaged 3.0 kills per set as the Judges opened the season 3-1 with their only loss coming in a five-set thriller to top-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges. She hit .545 with 21 kills against the Athenas, a match in which the Judges battled back from a 2-0 deficit and saved three match points before falling 17-15 in the final set. Bartlett finished with 11 kills and hit .348 in a four-set win over previously unbeaten University of Redlands.
Emma Griffith — University of Chicago — New York, NY (Calhoun)
University of Chicago sophomore setter Emma Griffith was named Most Valuable Player of the Maroons’ Gargoyle Classic. She averaged 11.14 assists and 3.07 digs per set as the Maroons posted a 4-0 record. Griffith recorded 54 assists and 19 digs in a five-set win over Cornell College and averaged 12.33 assists in a sweep of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.
Sara Apanavicius — University of Rochester — Painesville, OH (Riverside)
University of Rochester junior Sara Apanavicius was named to the all-tournament team at the State University of New York at Cortland Red Dragon Classic. She averaged 5.17 digs and 1.08 aces per set in helping lead the Yellowjackets to a 4-0 record, their best start since the 2005 team opened 7-0, and the tournament title. Apanavicius recorded double-digit digs in each match.
Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
