Athletes of the Week for September 3, 2019

Women’s Cross Country

Leah Ulrich — University of Chicago  —  Glencoe, IL (New Trier)

Leah Ulrich of University of Chicago began her collegiate career by winning the five-kilometer race at the University of St. Francis Twilight Invitational on Friday night. Her time of 18:14.7 paced the 154-runner field and helped lead the Maroons to the team title.

Men’s Cross Country

Jack Whetstone — Emory University  —  Glenview, IL (Glenbrook South)

Junior Jack Whetstone placed first in the 159-runner field to lead Emory University to the team title at the Jacksonville State University Struts Opener. He clocked a five-kilometer time of 15:31.6.

Women’s Golf

Annie Mascot — Washington University  —  Agoura Hills, CA (Agoura)

First-year golfer Annie Mascot earned co-medalist honors as Washington University opened the season with a 15-shot victory over NAIA William Woods University at the I-70 Dual on Saturday. She shot a three-over par 75 at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield, Missouri.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Anika Washburn — Case Western Reserve University  —  Brookfield, WI (Brookfield Academy)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore midfielder Anika Washburn scored four goals and recorded a pair of assists as the Spartans opened the season with two wins. She netted two goals in each victory,
4-0 over Oberlin College on Friday and 8-0 over State University of New York Fredonia on Sunday.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Gabbie Cesarone — Washington University  —  St. Charles, IL (St. Charles North)

Washington University sophomore back Gabbie Cesarone anchored the back line as the Bears posted a pair of shutouts in a 1-0-1 week. The Bears’ defense limited Calvin College to three shots on goal in a 3-0 win on Friday and held 15th-ranked Hope College to two shots on frame in a scoreless draw on Saturday. Cesarone also netted the game-winner at Calvin.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Elliot Cohen — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Solana Beach, CA (Canyon Crest Academy)

Carnegie Mellon senior Elliot Cohen scored a goal in each game as the Tartans finished 1-1 at the Salisbury University Elmer Lord Memorial Soccer Tournament. He opened the season’s scoring in a 2-1 win over the host school and then tallied in the 60th minute in a 3-2 loss to St. Mary’s College of Maryland.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Aaron Katsimpalis — University of Chicago  —  Harrison Township, MI (L’Anse Creuse)

University of Chicago junior goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis posted a pair of shutouts as the Maroons began the campaign with back-to-back scoreless draws. He made two saves in each game, at Macalester College on Saturday and at 12th-ranked University of St. Thomas on Sunday.

Volleyball

Leah Saunders — Emory University  —  Simpsonville, SC (St. Joseph’s Catholic)

Junior Leah Saunders was named Most Valuable Player of the Emory University Volleyball Classic after leading the Eagles to a 3-0 weekend. She averaged a team-high 3.82 kills, hitting .359 (42-14-78), and added 2.73 digs per set. Saunders recorded a career-high 21 kills as Emory upended eighth-ranked Johnson & Wales University in four sets.

Leila King — Washington University  —  Atlanta, GA (Marist)

Senior middle hitter Leila King totaled 45 kills on a .440 hitting percentage (45-8-84), 19 blocks, and 15 digs as Washington University split four matches. She posted a career-high 17 kills in the Bears’ four-set win over Cornell College and registered 10 blocks in a five-set loss to North Park University.

Emma Griffith — University of Chicago  —  New York, NY (The Calhoun School)

Junior setter Emma Griffith was named to the Gargoyle Classic All-Tournament Team as host University of Chicago finished with a 3-1 record. She averaged 10.57 assists and 3.86 digs per set. Griffith averaged 12.7 assists and 4.0 digs in a sweep of DePauw University, and totaled 41 assists and 20 digs in a four-set victory over Concordia University Wisconsin.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
