Athletes of the Week for September 10, 2018
Women’s Cross Country
Valentina House — NYU — Fort Lauderdale, FL (St. Thomas Aquinas)
NYU first-year runner Valentina House placed third in the 66-runner field at the Vassar College Ron Stonitsch Invitational in Poughkeepsie, New York. She completed the five-kilometer course in 19:22.6 for the fourth-place Violets.
Football – Offense
Rory Hubbard — Carnegie Mellon University — Rollins Hills Estates, CA (Palos Verdes Peninsula)
Senior running back Rory Hubbard rushed 20 times for a career-high 190 yards to lead Carnegie Mellon University to a 31-7 victory at University of Rochester. His 40-yard touchdown run started the scoring for the Tartans, who finished with 324 rushing yards. Hubbard returned a kickoff for 28 yards and added five yards receiving to end the game with 223 all-purpose yards.
Football – Defense
Ethan Anderson — Carnegie Mellon University — McMurray, PA (Peters Township)
Senior cornerback Ethan Anderson recorded his first career interception and two pass breakups to lead Carnegie Mellon University to a 31-7 road win over University of Rochester. He added four solo tackles and helped the Tartan defense limit the Yellowjackets to 95 passing yards.
Football – Special Teams
Brandon Nguyen — Carnegie Mellon University — Maitland, FL (Lake Highland Preparatory)
Freshman Brandon Nguyen did not miss a kick in his collegiate debut, a 31-7 Carnegie Mellon University win at University of Rochester. He converted all four of his extra point attempts and booted a 38-yard field goal.
Women’s Golf
Samantha Haubenstock — Washington University — Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)
Junior Samantha Haubenstock recorded a career-best round of 67 to earn medalist honors and lead Washington University to the team title at the rain-shortened Rhodes College Classic. The Bears won the seven-team event with a school-record 289 score. Haubenstock registered seven birdies and now owns three of the program’s five sub-70 rounds.
Men’s Golf
Aleksander Overli — University of Rochester — Oslo, Norway (Kristelig Gymnasium)
Sophomore Aleksander Overli of University of Rochester earned medalist honors at the Allegheny College Kuhn Invitational, carding rounds of 73 and 71 at the Country Club of Meadville to finish the event at even par. He tied for first place in the 77-player field, and was declared champion based on a better second-round score. The Yellowjackets placed third in the 14-team event that was played Saturday and Monday after rain washed out play on Sunday.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Kerri Eden — University of Rochester — Easton, CT (Joel Barlow)
University of Rochester senior forward Kerri Eden netted both goals in the Yellowjackets’ 2-2 draw with 14th-ranked State University of New York at Geneseo on Saturday. She scored the opening goal just 35 seconds into the contest and then recorded the equalizer in the 85th minute.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Carolyn Botz — Carnegie Mellon University — St. Louis, MO (Mary Institute & St. Louis Country Day)
Carnegie Mellon University sophomore goalkeeper Carolyn Botz earned her first two shutouts of the season as the Tartans won both matches at the Roanoke College Invitational Soccer Showcase. She made two stops in the Tartans’ 1-0 win over 16th-ranked University of Lynchburg on Saturday and made three saves in a 2-0 win over host Roanoke on Sunday.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Matthew Koh — University of Chicago — Santa Monica, CA (Loyola)
University of Chicago senior forward Matthew Koh scored twice on Saturday to lead the third-ranked Maroons to a 4-2 road win over second-ranked North Park College. He assisted on a goal in a 2-1 victory over Benedictine University on Wednesday.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Tyler Santee — Emory University — Huntersville, NC (Hopewell)
Emory University senior Tyler Santee was named Defensive Most Valuable Player for helping the Eagles take the title at the Ciallella Classic hosted by Rutgers University-Camden. He anchored the backline that limited Rowan College and Rutgers-Camden to a combined one goal on nine shots. Santee also scored the game-winning goal in the Eagles’ 2-1 win over the host school in the title match on Sunday.
Women’s Tennis
Shreyaa Mukund — Case Western Reserve University — Bellevue, WA (Interlake)
First-year player Shreyaa Mukund started her collegiate career by posting a 2-1 record in singles and doubles at the Oberlin College Invitational over the weekend. She teamed with classmate Sneha Karnam in doubles play at the non-scoring meet.
Men’s Tennis
Masaru Fujimaki — University of Rochester — Shanghai, China (Shanghai International)
Senior Masaru Fujimaki teamed with Isaiah Volk to win the “A” Flight doubles title at the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic and advance to the singles final. He and Volk posted 8-3 and 9-7 wins over opponents from Union College and Rochester Institute of Technology, respectively, to advance to the doubles semifinal. They won 8-5 over a Hobart College tandem in the semifinals and cruised to an 8-1 win in the title match against a duo from Hamilton College. Fujimaki recorded a 3-1 mark in singles to earn a runner-up finish.
Volleyball
Julianne Malek — Washington University — The Woodlands, TX (John Cooper)
Senior middle hitter Julianne Malek posted a .519 hitting percentage to lead Washington University to a 5-0 week, which included victories over 10th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University and 13th-ranked Carthage College. She recorded 2.81 kills and 1.25 blocks per set and added seven service aces to earn a spot on the Bear Invitational All-Tournament Team. Malek hit .824 (14-0-17) against Carthage.
Finn Wilkins — Emory University — Scottsdale, AZ (Desert Mountain)
Sophomore middle hitter Finn Wilkins averaged 1.62 blocks per set as Emory University posted a 5-0 record for the week. She registered at least five blocks in Eagles’ wins over Transylvania University, Otterbein University, and Tufts University. Wilkins hit .304 and averaged 1.92 kills per set, posting a season-best 11 kills against the Jumbos.
Zoe Baxter — Washington University — Los Angeles, CA (Harvard-Westlake)
Junior Zoe Baxter averaged 5.82 digs per set as Washington University finished the week 5-0. She finished with 23 digs and two assists in the Bears’ win over 10th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University and contributed 19 in a victory over 13th-ranked Carthage College.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
