Athletes of the Week for September 11, 2023
Men’s Golf
Brendan Frain — University of Rochester — Sudbury, MA (Lincoln-Sudbury)
Graduate student Brendan Frain earned medalist honors and led University of Rochester to the team title at the St. John Fisher University Invitational. He finished as the lone player under par in the 39-player field at three-under par 210 (69-70-71). Frain’s win was his second career title.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Yasla Ngoma — Brandeis University — North Plainfield, NJ (Oak Knoll)
Brandeis University senior forward Yasla Ngoma netted three goals in a pair of Judges’ road wins. She tallied the first two scores on Tuesday in a 3-1 victory over Babson College and scored the eventual game-winner on Friday in a 2-1 win over Roger Williams University.
Mia McGinty — University of Rochester — Rye, NY (Rye)
University of Rochester senior midfielder Mia McGinty recorded four assists in a 1-0-1 week for the Yellowjackets. She tied the program single-game record with three assists in a 4-0 victory over Alfred University on Thursday. On Sunday, McGinty assisted on the game-tying goal with just over 10 minutes remaining to draw the Yellowjackets even with seventh-ranked William Smith College.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Rachel Kim — NYU — Boston, MA (Boston Latin)
NYU junior defender Rachel Kim anchored a defense that did not allow a shot on goal in two wins at the Stevens Institute of Technology Engineering Cup. The Violets posted a 4-0 win over Widener University on Friday, buoyed by an assist from Kim, and blanked the host Ducks, 3-0, on Sunday.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Matt Vatne — Case Western Reserve University — Sterling Heights, MI (Adlai Stevenson)
Senior midfielder Matt Vatne had a hand in three of four goals in two Case Western Reserve University wins. He assisted on each of the first two scores in a 3-0 win over Defiance College and netted the only goal in a victory over Capital University on Saturday.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Peter Wagner — Emory University — Champaign, IL (Champaign Central)
Senior goalkeeper Peter Wagner made nine saves and allowed just one goal as Emory University earned its first two wins of the season. He made five saves in a 2-1 Eagles’ win over Pacific Lutheran University and registered his third shutout in four games in a 2-0 victory over Willamette University.
Women’s Tennis
Divya Venkatarama — Carnegie Mellon University — Kendall Park, NJ (South Brunswick)
Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Divya Venkatarama won all three of her singles matches at the Kenyon College Invitational. She earned victories over Lily McCloskey of UAA rival Case Western Reserve University, and opponents from Denison University and Kenyon.
Men’s Tennis
Ethan Samora — University of Rochester — Upper Arlington, OH (Upper Arlington)
University of Rochester freshman Ethan Samora captured the “C” flight singles crown at the St. Lawrence University Fall Classic. He posted four consecutive wins by a combined score of 32-13. Samora teamed with Kai Yuminaga to split two matches in “A” flight doubles.
Volleyball
Jasmine Sells — Washington University — Portland, OR (Lincoln)
Junior outside hitter Jasmine Sells hit .404, while averaging 4.33 kills and 3.08 digs per set, as Washington University finished 3-0 at the East-West Classic in Claremont, California. She recorded 16 kills with a .538 hitting percentage in a four-set Bears’ win over seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins University. Sells followed with 23 kills and 18 digs in a five-set victory over the second-ranked hosts Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges.
Deborah Hong — Emory University — La Cañada Flintridge, CA (Polytechnic)
Junior defensive specialist/libero Deborah Hong was named to the East-West Classic All-Tournament Team after helping lead Emory University to a 3-0 record at the tournament in Claremont, California. She averaged 5.64 digs per set, adding 1.27 assists per set. Hong recorded 19 receptions and 18 digs in a four-set Eagles’ win over 17th-ranked Tufts University, and then registered 26 digs (6.50 per set) in a four-set victory over Colorado College.
Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
