Athletes of the Week for September 12, 2022

Women’s Golf

Sharon Mun  —  Emory University  —  Duluth, GA (Lambert)

Emory University sophomore Sharon Mun won the second tournament of her collegiate career this past weekend at the Hamilton College Invitational. She shot a one-under par 145 (73-72) over two rounds to help the Eagles capture the title against a field with four top-25 teams, including fourth-ranked Williams College and eighth-ranked NYU. Mun was the only golfer to shoot par or better in both rounds.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Claire Grover  —  University of Rochester  —  Barrington, RI (Barrington)

University of Rochester junior forward Claire Grover scored the first five Yellowjacket goals and added an assist in a 7-1 win at State University of New York Brockport on Wednesday. She tallied a goal and an assist in a 5-1 Rochester victory over Alfred University on Saturday. Grover currently ranks third in NCAA Division III in goals and points.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Livia Sabloff  —  University of Chicago  —  Leesburg, VA (Riverside)

University of Chicago sophomore center back Livia Sabloff led the eighth-ranked Maroons to three shutouts. Tasked with breaking up long balls and runs at the goal, she anchored the defense that led its opponents to a combined 17 shots with seven on goal. The Maroons earned wins over Kalamazoo College, Penn State Behrend, and Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Joe Leslie  —  NYU  —  London, England (Haberdashers’ Aske’s Boys’ School)

Junior forward Joe Leslie netted three goals as NYU split two contests. He scored in the 25th minute and again in the 59th minute in the Violets’ 9-0 rout of Hunter College and netted the Violets’ lone goal in a
2-1 loss to State University at New York at New Paltz.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Richard Gillespie  —  University of Chicago —  Charlotte, NC (Charlotte Country Day School)

Senior center back Richard Gillespie led fourth-ranked University of Chicago to a 3-0 week in which the defense yielded just one goal. The Maroons shut out Concordia University Chicago and DePauw University before edging 15th-ranked St. Olaf College in rainy conditions on Sunday. Gillespie also contributed a pair of assists in the 4-0 victory over Concordia.

Women’s Tennis

Dakota Fordham  —  NYU  —  New York, NY (Laurel Springs)

Sophomore Dakota Fordham posted a 5-0 record at the opening day of the Vassar College Scramble, winning all three of her singles matches and both doubles contests. Playing in the first flight, she posted wins over opponents from Hamilton College (8-1), Vassar (8-5), and State University of New York at New Paltz (8-3). Fordham teamed with Ida Krause to drop just one game in victories over Vassar and Hamilton duos.

Volleyball

Jennifer Ngo  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Toledo, OH (Notre Dame Academy)

Junior middle blocker Jennifer Ngo hit .525, averaging 3.77 kills and 1.46 blocks per set in a 4-0 Case Western Reserve University week. She recorded a career-high 23 kills with a .559 hitting percentage and eight blocks as the Spartans recorded a five-set win over University of Mount Union, their first over the Purple Raiders since 2015. Ngo registered 10 kills and a .625 hitting percentage in a sweep of Saint Vincent College on Saturday.

Alana Dawson  —  Emory University  —  League City, TX (Clear Springs)

Sophomore Alana Dawson earned all-tournament honors at the Emory University East-West Classic, leading the Eagles to a 2-1 record against top-10 opponents. She hit .361 with 18 kills in a four-set Eagles’ victory over second-ranked Trinity University and .412 with nine kills in a sweep of seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins University. Dawson posted a .370 hitting percentage, averaging 3.93 kills per set in four matches.

Sam Buckley  —  Washington University  —  Naperville, IL (Benet Academy)

First-year setter Sam Buckley averaged 11.79 assists and 3.50 digs per set in a 4-0 week for Washington University. She totaled 43 assists and 13 digs in a four-set Bears’ victory over 16th-ranked Tufts University at the Emory University East-West Classic. Buckley averaged 14.0 assists per set in a sweep of University of Dubuque on Wednesday and 12.25 assists in a four-set win over University of Texas-Dallas.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
