Athletes of the Week for September 17, 2018
Women’s Cross Country
Emily Bryson — Brandeis University — Quincy, MA (North Quincy)
Senior Emily Bryson finished first at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational to lead Brandeis University to the team title for the third time in four years. She completed the five-kilometer race in 17:54.6, besting the runner-up by 20 seconds. Bryson had finished fourth, third, and second in her previous three appearances in the meet.
Men’s Cross Country
Bradley Hodkinson — Washington University — Snohomish, WA (Snohomish)
Senior Bradley Hodkinson placed first to lead Washington University to the title at the 17-team Wheaton College Gil Dodds Invitational title. He outkicked his nearest competitor in the final 100 meters of the race, covering the eight-kilometer course in 25:21.7. The seventh-ranked Bears recorded five of the top six times.
Football – Offense
Drew Saxton — Case Western Reserve University — South Fayette, PA (South Fayette)
Case Western Reserve University freshman quarterback Drew Saxton completed 24 of 34 passes for 361 yards and five touchdowns in three quarters of play to lead the 19th-ranked Spartans to a 49-23 win at Grove City College on Saturday night. He completed his first seven passes and 12 of his first 13, leading off the second quarter with a 71-yard pass. Saxton tossed four scoring passes to sophomore Colt Morgan.
Football – Defense
Robert Grant — University of Rochester — Syracuse, NY (Christian Brothers Academy)
Junior defensive back Robert Grant intercepted four passes, one in each quarter, in a 20-14 University of Rochester road win over Alfred State College. He picked off two passes at midfield, one at his own five-yard line, and another in the Yellowjackets’ end zone. Two of Grant’s interceptions set up field goals. The victory marked the first Rochester win for head coach Chad Martinovich.
Football – Special Teams
Dawson Klinger — University of Rochester — Selinsgrove, PA (Selinsgrove Area)
University of Rochester sophomore placekicker Dawson Klinger converted all four of his kicks, two field goals and two extra points, in a 20-14 Yellowjackets’ victory at Alfred State College. He connected on field goals of 33 and 24 yards to become the first Rochester kicker to kick a pair of field goals since 2015.
Women’s Golf
Samantha Haubenstock — Washington University — Weston, FL (Pine Crest School)
Washington University junior Samantha Haubenstock placed second overall at the Illinois Wesleyan University Fall Classic to lead the eighth-ranked Bears to their third consecutive event victory. She finished with a two-under par 142 (70-72) for the Bears, who won the 16-team tournament with 16 fewer strokes than the runner-up team.
Men’s Golf
James Pak — Carnegie Mellon University — Palisades Park, NJ (Bergen Catholic)
Carnegie Mellon University freshman James Pak carded a two-round score of one-over par 141 at the Tartans’ Fall Shootout. He shot a 71 in his first collegiate competition and followed that with an even-par 70 in the second round. The Tartans “B” team placed fourth in the 14-team event.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Jenna McKinney — University of Chicago — Tampa, FL (Henry B. Plant)
Senior midfielder Jenna McKinney scored three times in a 1-0-1 week for third-ranked University of Chicago. She netted the team’s goal in a 1-1 midweek draw with 15th-ranked Hope College. McKinney scored a pair of goals in a 4-0 win over University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Emma Schechter — University of Rochester — Belleair, FL (Largo)
First-year goalkeeper Emma Schechter made a season-high eight saves, including four in the final 30 minutes, as University of Rochester withstood a second-half rally to upset second-ranked William Smith College, 2-1. The victory marked the Yellowjackets’ first over the Herons in eight years and first win at William Smith since 1991.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Matthew Koh — University of Chicago — Santa Monica, CA (Loyola)
Senior forward Matthew Koh scored a goal in each of three wins for second-ranked University of Chicago. He tallied the opening goal in a 4-0 Maroons’ win over rival Wheaton College (IL) and another game-winner in a 2-0 victory over Macalester College, adding an assist in that win. Koh finished the week with a goal in a 3-0 victory over Loras College.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Aaron Katsimpalis — University of Chicago — Harrison Township, MI (L’Anse Creuse)
Sophomore goalie Aaron Katsimpalis recorded three consecutive shutouts to move to 6-0-1 this season for second-ranked University of Chicago. He made four saves in a 4-0 victory over Wheaton College (IL) and totaled five saves in weekend wins over Macalester College (2-0) and Loras College (3-0).
Women’s Tennis
Daniela Lopez — Emory University — Coral Gables, FL (Ransom Everglades)
Emory University senior Daniela Lopez earned the singles title in the top draw at the ITA Grass Court Invitational in Newport, Rhode Island. She topped teammate Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico, 6-4, 7-6 (8) in the final on Sunday. Lopez added a 2-0 record in the “B” doubles draw, posting back-to-back 8-3 wins with Emma Cartledge.
Men’s Tennis
Jackson Kogan — Brandeis University — Los Angeles, CA (Windward School)
Adam Tzeng — Brandeis University — Eagle, ID (Eagle)
Senior Jackson Kogan and freshman Adam Tzeng of Brandeis University captured the “A” doubles flight at the Middlebury College Invitational. After posting an 8-4 win in the first round, the duo upset the top-seeded team from the host school, 9-8 (7-2) in the quarterfinals. Kogan and Tzeng defeated a tandem from Tufts, 8-5, in the semifinals and led a Bates team 4-0 in the final before their opponent retired.
Volleyball
Ifeoma Ufondu — Washington University — Lancaster, CA (Quartz Hill)
Washington University senior Ifeoma Ufondu averaged 3.82 kills per set with a .315 hitting percentage as the Bears won two of three matches against top-15 teams at the East-West Challenge in California. She recorded 20 kills with a .432 hitting percentage in the Bears’ four-set victory over third-ranked host and defending champion Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday.
Kayla Yew — Carnegie Mellon University — San Francisco, CA (Sacred Heart Cathedral)
Carnegie Mellon junior libero Kayla Yew averaged 6.80 digs per set to help lead the Tartans to a 4-0 week. She recorded a career-high 45 digs as the Tartans handed Muhlenberg College its second loss of the season, her third career 40-dig effort. Yew extended her streak of double-digit digs to 52 matches.
Emma Griffith — University of Chicago — New York, NY (Calhoun)
Sophomore setter Emma Griffith averaged 12.67 assists and 2.78 digs per set and earned Carthage College all-tournament honors in a 4-1 week for the Maroons. She totaled 53 assists and 18 digs in the Maroons’ four-set victory over 11th-ranked Illinois Wesleyan University. Griffith recorded another double-double with 45 assists and 11 digs in a four-set win over 19th-ranked Carthage College.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
