Athletes of the Week for September 26, 2022

Women’s Golf

Sydney Kuo  —  Washington University  —  South Plainfield, NJ (The Wardlaw Hartridge School)

Sophomore Sydney Kuo earned individual medalist honors and led seventh-ranked Washington University to the team title at the Montgomery Country Club Women’s Intercollegiate. She shot an eight-under par 136 to better the runner-up by five strokes, posting a tournament-best six-under par 66 on Monday. The Bears won the 15-team tournament field that included multiple nationally ranked squads, including UAA rivals Carnegie Mellon University and defending NCAA Division III champion Emory University.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Mara Rodriguez  —  Emory University  —  Roanoke, VA (Inspiration Academy)

Emory University graduate student Mara Rodriguez scored three goals to lead the Eagles to a 5-1 victory over Maryville College (TN) on Friday. Her three-goal performance marked the first by an Eagles’ player since 2018, and recorded the first goals of Rodriguez’s collegiate career.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Rachel Legg  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Kansas City, MO (Pembroke Hill)

Carnegie Mellon University senior defender Rachel Legg helped the Tartans to a pair of shutout victories at home. She anchored the defense that limited 5-2 Baldwin Wallace University scoreless in a 5-0 win and added an assist in the Tartans’ 2-0 win over Penn State Behrend.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Ryan Yetishefsky  — University of Chicago  —  Edmond, OK (Deer Creek)

Junior forward Ryan Yetishefsky scored the game-winning goal as top-ranked University of Chicago edged 10th-ranked host Calvin University. He broke a 1-1 tie with his score in the 79th minute.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Joe Anderson  —  University of Rochester —  Washington Crossing, PA (YSC Academy)

Junior defender Joe Anderson scored a goal and keyed the University of Rochester defense in two victories. He netted the opening score in a 2-1 Yellowjackets’ win over State University of New York at Geneseo on Tuesday. Anderson helped the defense limit previously unbeaten York College (PA) to one shot on goal in a 1-0 Yellowjackets’ victory.

Women’s Tennis

Danna Taylor  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Orlando, FL (Circle Christian School)
Crystal Zhou  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Austin, TX (Liberal Arts and Science Academy)

Junior Danna Taylor and sophomore Crystal Zhou of Carnegie Mellon University captured the ITA Southeast Regional Doubles Championship title, marking the fifth consecutive year the Tartans won the doubles crown. Taylor, who earned her third regional doubles title, and Zhou came from behind in the championship match with a 5-7, 6-2, 10-8 win over competitors Stephanie from Washington & Lee University.

Stephanie Shulman  —  Emory University —  Gates Mils, OH (Hawken School)

Senior Stephanie Shulman of Emory University won the ITA South Regional Singles Championship title with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over her Sewanee: The University of the South opponent in the final. She won all four of her matches in straight sets, dropping more than two games in a set only once. She and Alexa Goetz advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles draw.

Ida Krause  —  NYU  —  Vedbaek, Denmark (Øregård Gymnasium)
Dakota Fordham  —  NYU  —  New York, NY (Laurel Springs School, CA)

Graduate student Ida Krause and sophomore Dakota Fordham of NYU captured the ITA Northeast Regional Doubles Championship title, marking the fifth consecutive year the Violets won the doubles crown. The tandem won the championship match 6-1, 6-3 against rivals from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Krause also became NYU’s fourth singles champion in the past five years with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Fordham in the final.

Men’s Tennis

Abhi Ramireddy  —  Washington University  —  Waller, TX (Cypress Ranch)
Phuc Huynh  —  Washington University  —  Honolulu, HI (’Iolani School)

Senior Abhi Ramireddy and graduate student Phuc Huynh of Washington University earned the ITA Central Regional Doubles Championship title. The tandem upended the top-seeded Case Western Reserve University pair of James Hopper and Vishwa Aduru, 6-4, 7-5, in the final. Ramireddy also won the singles title, defeating a pair of UAA opponents in the final two matches, to finish the weekend a combined 11-0 in singles and doubles to become the first Bears’ player to sweep the ITA regional titles.

Volleyball

Leela Anvekar  —  NYU  —  San Marino, CA (San Marino)

Sophomore middle blocker Leela Anvekar hit .526 with 1.50 kills and 1.0 blocks per set as NYU finished 2-1 over the weekend, including splitting two matches against ranked opponents. She notched a career-high 13 kills and a .765 hitting percentage in a Violets’ win over Susquehanna University, which received votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll. Anvekar hit .333 with just one error in two five-set matches, a loss to 24th-ranked Tufts University and a victory over 16th-ranked Wesleyan University.

Diya Mishra  —  University of Chicago  —  Seattle, WA (The Overlake School)

First-year middle blocker Diya Mishra of University of Chicago averaged 1.5 blocks per set, posting a season-best 11 blocks in the Maroons’ five-set win over fifth-ranked Calvin University on Wednesday. She added nine blocks in a five-set setback to University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Friday.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
