Athletes of the Week for October 7, 2019

Women’s Cross Country

Abigail Levine  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Bethesda, MD (Bethesda Chevy Chase)

Carnegie Mellon University senior Abigail Levine led the 20th-ranked Tartans in the brown race at the Lehigh University Paul Short Invitational. She finished the six-kilometer course in 21:46.9 to place 20th out of 370 runners from all divisions.

Men’s Cross Country

Michael OBroin  —  Carnegie Mellon University —  Park Ridge, IL (Saint Ignatius College Prep)

Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Michael OBroin led seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University in the gold race at the Lehigh University Paul Short Invitational. Competing against NCAA Division I and III runners, he completed the eight-kilometer course in 24:31.2.

Football – Offense

Marco Cobian  — University of Chicago  —  Ramona, CA (Ramona)

Senior quarterback Marco Cobian completed 17 of 19 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns in the first half of University of Chicago’s 48-0 victory over Beloit College. The third and fourth quarters were shortened to one minute each due to consistent lightning delays.

Football – Defense

Travis Johnston  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Zanesville, OH (Bishop Rosencrans)

Junior linebacker Travis Johnston recorded a season-high 11 tackles, including seven unassisted stops, to help Case Western Reserve University to a 21-13 win over Westminster College (PA) in a battle of unbeaten teams. He added an interception, forced a fumble, and broke up two passes.

Football – Special Teams

Mike Martinson  —  University of Chicago —  Brea, CA (Brea-Olinda)

Junior running back Mike Martinson returned four punts for 79 yards (19.8 yards per return) with a long of 37 yards as University of Chicago blanked Beloit College, 48-0, in a weather-curtailed game. The third and fourth quarters were shortened to one minute each due to consistent lightning delays. He added 42 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Men’s Golf

Matt Organisak  —  Emory University  —  Sudbury, MA (Lincoln-Sudbury Regional)

Emory University senior Matt Organisak shot a five-under par 211 (70-68-73) to tie for fifth place in the 75-player Gordin Classic. His four-under par 68 was the top Eagles’ round of the tournament and helped lead the first-ranked Eagles to a third-place finish in the 15-team tournament.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Taylor Cohen  —  Washington University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Washington University senior forward Taylor Cohen scored five goals and added an assist in two wins for the sixth-ranked Bears. She recorded the first hat trick of her career in a 5-0 win over Millikin University on Wednesday and contributed two goals, including the game-winner, in a 3-1 victory over University of Rochester in the UAA opener for both teams.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Miranda Malone  —  University of Chicago  —  Cary, IL (Cary-Grove)

University of Chicago junior goalkeeper Miranda Malone made a career-high 10 saves as the Maroons opened UAA play with a 2-1 win over Emory University. She stopped five shots in each half.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Sergio Monton  —  NYU  —  Madrid, Spain (Fundación Fomento)

NYU senior midfielder Sergio Monton scored one goal and assisted on another as the Violets began their UAA season with a 3-0 home win over Case Western Reserve University. He scored on a free kick with less than a minute remaining in the first half to give the Violets a 2-0 lead.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Luca Mancuso  —  NYU  —  Miami, FL (Montverde Academy)

NYU freshman goalkeeper Luca Mancuso made nine saves to earn his first win of the season in the Violets’ UAA home opener, a 3-0 victory over Case Western Reserve University.

Women’s Tennis

Danna Taylor  — Carnegie Mellon University  —  Orlando, FL (Circle Christian School)

Sophomore Danna Taylor earned four wins as Carnegie Mellon University defeated Christopher Newport University and UAA rival Case Western Reserve University. She paired with Courtney Ollis for two wins at No. 1 doubles, dropping a total of five games. Taylor earned straight-set wins at first singles over both players who were nationally ranked last season.

Men’s Tennis

James Hopper  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Montgomery, NJ (Montgomery)
Matthew Chen  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Wynnewood, PA (Lower Merion)

Freshman James Hopper and junior Matthew Chen claimed the doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Central Region Championships, becoming the first players in Case Western Reserve University program history to capture the regional title. The fifth seeds defeated third-seeded Tyler Raclin and Joshua Xu of University of Chicago, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5 in the championship match. Hopper also earned the singles title, another program first, defeating the top two seeds in the field. Chen advanced to the semifinals in singles competition.

Volleyball

Leah Saunders  —  Emory University  —  Simpsonville, SC (St. Joseph’s Catholic)

Emory University junior Leah Saunders hit .326 and averaged 4.0 kills per set in a 3-0 week for the top-ranked Eagles, which included a pair of wins at the second UAA round robin. She hit .342 with 21 kills and nine digs in a four-set victory over Washington University, and finished with 13 kills and 11 digs in a four-set triumph over NYU.

Kayla Yew  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  San Francisco, CA (Sacred Heart Cathedral)

Carnegie Mellon University senior libero Kayla Yew recorded a season-best 34 digs in the 14th-ranked Tartan’s four-set loss to third-ranked University of Chicago. She averaged 6.78 digs per set in the Tartans’ 1-1 record in UAA play, totaling 27 digs in a five-set victory over Case Western Reserve University.

Katherine Wilson  —  University of Chicago  —  Oceanside, CA (Mission Vista)

University of Chicago junior libero Katherine Wilson averaged 6.14 digs per set as the third-ranked Maroons remained unbeaten in UAA play with wins over Brandeis University and Carnegie Mellon University. The Chicago defense limited the Judges to a .059 hitting percentage and the Tartans to a .045 hitting percentage.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Elle Pollitt  —  Washington University  —  St. Johns, FL (Creekside)

Washington University junior Ellie Pollitt posted times of 1:57.01 in the 200-yard freestyle and 1:00.38 in the 100-yard backstroke as the Bears competed in the Show-Me Showdown in Columbia, Missouri. She posted a split time of 53.95 seconds as the lead on the 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished in 3:36.16.

Rosie Finglass  —  Washington University  —  Decatur, GA (The Galloway School)

Washington University first-year diver Rosie Finglass posted a pair of top-15 finishes at the Show-Me Showdown in Columbia, Missouri. She placed 13th in the three-meter event (179.95 points) and 14th on the one-meter board (188.30 points).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Kevin Hao  —  Washington University  —  Canton, MI (Cranbrook Kingswood School)

Washington University sophomore Kevin Hao turned in times of 1:56.01 in the 200-yard individual medley and 4:51.93 in the 500-yard freestyle at the Show-Me Showdown in Columbia, Missouri. He posted a split of 48.00 as the lead leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Matthew Grottkau  —  Washington University  —  Reading, MA (Phillips Academy Andover)

Washington University senior Matthew Grottkau posted 11th-place finishes in both diving events at the Show-Me Showdown in Columbia, Missouri. He recorded a score of 162.15 on the three-meter board and 159.20 in the one-meter event.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
