Athletes of the Week for October 8, 2018
Women’s Cross Country
Parvathi Meyyappan — Carnegie Mellon University — Cupertino, CA (Monta Vista)
Carnegie Mellon University sophomore Parvathi Meyyappan finished first among NCAA Division III competitors in a 76-runner multi-division field at the Tartans’ Hampton Inn Pittsburgh - University/Medical Center Invitational. She completed the five-kilometer race in 19:08.2, third overall, to help lead the Tartans to a third-place finish in the nine-team field.
Men’s Cross Country
Gavin Fujimori — University of Chicago — Shrewsbury, MA (Middlesex School)
University of Chicago junior Gavin Fujimori finished fifth of 188 runners at the Benedictine University Eagle Invitational. He completed the eight-kilometer course in 26:04.1 to lead the Maroons to a runner-up finish in the 21-team meet, behind only national power North Central College.
Football – Offense
Colt Morgan — Case Western Reserve University — Wooster, OH (Wooster)
Sophomore wide receiver Colt Morgan recorded career-highs of 13 receptions and 190 yards, while matching his own program record with four touchdowns in 19th-ranked Case Western Reserve University’s 44-36 loss at 12th-ranked Washington & Jefferson College. He caught a scoring pass in each quarter, including a 25-yarder for the opening score of the game. Morgan’s longest reception was a 37-yard touchdown catch.
Football – Special Teams
Duncan Stewart — University of Rochester — San Carlos, CA (Sequoia)
Freshman wide receiver Duncan Stewart finished with 273 all-purpose yards in a 38-24 University of Rochester home loss to St. Lawrence University, including 151 yards in kick returns. He averaged 18.5 yards on six kickoff returns and 20.0 yards on a pair of punt returns. Stewart added 119 receiving yards and three yards rushing.
Women’s Golf
Arisa Kimura — NYU — Bethesda, MD (Stone Ridge School of the Sacred Heart)
Junior Arisa Kimura of NYU won the individual title and led the Violets to the team title at the Washington & Lee University General’s Invitational on Sunday and Monday. She bested a field of 65 golfers by shooting even par over two rounds, including a three-under par 69 on Monday. NYU finished first with UAA rival Carnegie Mellon University finishing five shots behind.
Men’s Golf
Logan Ryan — Emory University — Fort Wayne, IN (Bishop Dwenger)
Emory University freshman Logan Ryan finished second in the 90-player field at the Gordin Classic in Columbus, Ohio. His six-under par 210 (70-71-69) marked the program’s third-best score in a 54-hole event and left him just one stroke off the individual medalist’s score. The top-ranked Eagles placed second of 13 teams with the program’s second best 54-hole score, an eight-under par 856.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Isabelle Turner — NYU — Fort Lauderdale, FL (Pine Crest)
NYU junior midfielder Isabelle Turner netted both goals as the Violets remained undefeated in UAA play with a 2-0 road win over Case Western Reserve University. She scored her goals within a four-minute span early in the game.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Meghan Marhan — NYU — Glen Ridge, NJ (Glen Ridge)
NYU sophomore goalkeeper Meghan Marhan posted back-to-back shutouts in a 1-0-1 week for the Violets. She made four saves in a scoreless draw with Rutgers University-Newark on Tuesday and then stopped three shots in a 2-0 NYU win at Case Western Reserve University on Saturday.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Devan Casey — Brandeis University — Amherst, NH (Souhegan)
Brandeis University senior forward Devan Casey had a hand in all three Judges’ goals in a 2-0 week, scoring twice and assisting on the other. He scored the first goal and the game-winner in the Judges’ 2-1 victory over Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Tuesday and netted the only goal in a win at previously undefeated and eighth-ranked Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Aaron Katsimpalis — University of Chicago — Harrison Township, MI (L’Anse Creuse)
University of Chicago sophomore goalkeeper Aaron Katsimpalis earned his seventh shutout of the season in the second-ranked Maroons’ 2-0 victory at 12th-ranked Emory University. He made five saves in the contest.
Women’s Tennis
Jamie Vizelman — Carnegie Mellon University — Highland Heights, OH (Mayfield)
Senior Jamie Vizelman won her No. 2 singles match in three sets in an 8-1 Carnegie Mellon University win over NCAA Division II Walsh University. She dropped the first set 6-1 before bouncing back for 6-4 and 7-6(1) wins.
Men’s Tennis
Tyler Raclin — University of Chicago — St. Louis, MO (Mary institute and St. Louis Country Day)
Jeremy Yuan — University of Chicago — Johns Creek, GA (Northview)
Junior Tyler Raclin and sophomore Jeremy Yuan of University of Chicago won their second consecutive ITA Central Region doubles title, stringing together six consecutive wins. The duo defeated teammates Charlie Pei and Joshua Xu by scores of 6-3, 6-1 on the Chicago campus on Wednesday. The doubles title marked the third for Raclin in as many seasons.
Ethan Hillis — Washington University — Centennial, CO (Cherry Creek)
Sophomore transfer Ethan Hillis of Washington University posted seven wins in four days to capture the ITA Central Region singles title in St. Louis. The eighth seed topped seventh-seeded Jeremy Yuan of University of Chicago, 7-5, 4-6, 6-2, in the championship match on Monday.
Volleyball
Julianne Malek — Washington University — The Woodlands, TX (John Cooper)
Senior middle hitter Julianne Malek earned all-tournament honors while helping 11th-ranked Washington University to four victories, including a five-set win over second-ranked Colorado College in the Bears’ home invitational. She averaged 3.54 kills per set with a .612 hitting percentage, adding 46 kills, 15 digs, 13 blocks, and four service aces. She hit .727 (16 kills, no errors, 22 attacks) with seven digs, five blocks, and two aces against Colorado College to cap the weekend.
Leila King — Washington University — Atlanta, GA (Marist)
Junior middle hitter Leila King recorded a career-high 12 blocks, one shy of the Washington University program record, in a five-set win over second-ranked Colorado College in the final match of the Bears’ home invitational. In a 4-0 week for the Bears, she hit .400 with 1.86 kills per set, while averaging 1.36 blocks per set.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Rachel Reistroffer — NYU — Spartanburg, SC (Dorman)
Rachel Reistroffer began her collegiate career at NYU with the second-fastest time in NCAA Division III in the early season in both the 500- and 1,000-yard freestyles. She captured the 500 in 5:10.11 and then defeated the defending NCAA Division II champion from West Chester University in the 1,000 with a time of 10:26.01.
Carmen White — NYU — Lake Bluff, IL (Lake Forest)
Junior Carmen White of NYU won the three-meter dive with a score of 277.42 in her season debut in a dual meet with NCAA Division II West Chester University on Saturday. She placed second on the one-meter board with a mark of 282.75.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Kevin Van Cleave — Washington University — Elm Grove, WI (Brookfield Academy)
Senior Kevin Van Cleave swam the top NCAA Division III time in the early season in the 100-yard breaststroke at the Show-Me-Showdown that featured multiple Division I and II foes. He placed fifth in the event with a provisional-qualifying time of 56.13 seconds. Van Cleave posted the third-best time in Division III in the 200-yard freestyle (1:43.74) and was a member of the 400-yard freestyle relay (3:07.66) that posted the second-best finish to date.
Cole Vertin — NYU — San Jose, CA (St. Francis)
Freshman Cole Vertin began his NYU career by winning both diving events against NCAA Division II West Chester University on Saturday. He posted scores of 285.60 on the one-meter board and 288.68 in the three-meter event.

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
