Athletes of the Week for October 15, 2018
Women’s Cross Country
Paige Lawler — Washington University — Lexington, MA (Lexington)
Junior Paige Lawler paced second-ranked Washington University to the team title at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Kollege Town Sports Invitational, the site of this year’s NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. She crossed the six-kilometer finish line in 21:31.6 to place second in the 349-competitor field that featured runners from 17 top-35 ranked teams.
Men’s Cross Country
Brad Hodkinson — Washington University — Snohomish, WA (Snohomish)
Senior Brad Hodkinson placed ninth in the 344-runner field at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh Kollege Town Sports Invitational, the site of this year’s NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships. He completed the eight-kilometer course in 25:19.8 as the Bears finished second to top-ranked North Central College and ahead of 15 top-35 squads.
Football – Offense
Colt Morgan — Case Western Reserve University — Wooster, OH (Wooster)
Case Western Reserve University sophomore wide receiver Colt Morgan recorded the most receiving yards in a single game by a wide receiver at any NCAA level (FBS, FBC, II or III) in the Spartans’ 37-7 win over Saint Vincent College. Playing just three quarters, Morgan finished with a program-record 281 receiving yards, matched the program record with 15 receptions, and caught three touchdown passes. Morgan caught nine passes for 152 yards and a pair of scores in the second quarter alone.
Football – Defense
Cameron Brown — Case Western Reserve University — Westlake, OH (Westlake)
Case Western Reserve senior defensive end Cameron Brown tallied 4.5 sacks in the in the Spartans’ 37-7 win over Saint Vincent College, the most in a single game by an NCAA Division III player this season. He totaled six tackles (five solo), forced a fumble with a strip sack in the third quarter, and recovered a fumble in the opening quarter. Brown’s sacks accounted for 18 yards lost for the Bearcats’ offense.
Football – Special Teams
Chase Witte — Case Western Reserve University — Cincinnati, OH (Milford)
Case Western Reserve sophomore wide receiver and punter Chase Witte averaged 37.2 yards per punt in the Spartans’ 37-7 victory over visiting Saint Vincent College. He booted a career-long 45-yarder and dropped one of his four punts inside the Bearcats’ 20-yard line. Witte also returned one kickoff for 22 yards.
Women’s Golf
Jessica Wu — NYU — Langley, BC, Canada (Mountain Secondary School)
Sophomore Jessica Wu led NYU to a runner-up finish at its own fall invitational with a fourth-place finish in the 43-player field. She shot rounds of 75 on Saturday and 81 on Sunday.
Men’s Golf
Matt Organisak — Emory University — Sudbury, MA (Lincoln-Sudbury Regional)
Junior Matt Organisak earned medalist honors at the Carnegie Mellon University Tartan Invitational, played on the 7,156-yard, par-72 Laurel Valley Golf Club in Ligonier, Pennsylvania. He topped the 90-player field that featured multiple nationally ranked teams with a three-under-par 213 (73-67-73). The top-ranked Eagles tied for first place in the 12-team field before falling on the first hole of a playoff.
Women’s Soccer – Offense
Madison Phaneuf — Emory University — Leesburg, VA (Tuscarora)
Senior midfielder Madison Phaneuf netted a goal in all three games during a 2-0-1 week for the Eagles. She scored two of the team’s three goals in two UAA road matches against teams entering the weekend undefeated in UAA play. Phaneuf netted the Eagles’ lone goal in a 1-1 draw at NYU on Friday and scored 9:16 into the game in a 2-1 win over 14th-ranked Brandeis University on Sunday.
Women’s Soccer – Defense
Maggie Crist — Washington University — Wayzata, MN (Minnetonka)
Senior midfielder Maggie Crist and the top-ranked Washington University defense allowed one goal in two UAA road victories. The Bears did not allow a shot on goal in a 2-0 win at Case Western Reserve University on Friday and limited 21st-ranked Carnegie Mellon University to four shots on goal in a 4-1 Bears’ win on Sunday. Crist added a goal and an assist on the weekend.
Men’s Soccer – Offense
Zachary Senft — Case Western Reserve University — Bay Village, OH (St. Ignatius)
Junior forward Zachary Senft scored one goal and assisted on another to help lead Case Western Reserve University to two home UAA wins over nationally ranked teams. He assisted on the only score in the Spartans’ 1-0 win over 23rd-ranked Washington University on Friday and broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute as the Spartans handed top-ranked and previously unbeaten University of Chicago its first loss of the season on Sunday.
Men’s Soccer – Defense
Nik Angyal — University of Rochester — Stormville, NY (John Jay-East Fishkill)
Senior defender Nik Angyal played a key role in back-to-back University of Rochester overtime UAA road wins at NYU and Brandeis University. He blocked a point-blank shot against the Judges as the Yellowjackets earned a 2-1 overtime win on Friday. On Sunday, Angyal made a team save to preserve a scoreless tie in the second half and later made a long run up the field and assisted teammate Patrice Douge on the game-winning goal in the second overtime.
Women’s Tennis
Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico — Emory University — Pinecrest, FL (Gulliver Preparatory)
Emory University sophomore and top-seeded Ysabel Gonzalez-Rico was crowned the ITA Cup Division III singles national champion over the weekend. She won all three of her matches in straight sets, including a 6-4, 6-1 win over her second-seeded opponent from John Carroll University. Gonzalez-Rico also reached the semifinals in doubles with first-year teammate Jessica Fatemi.
Men’s Tennis
Adrien Bouchet — Emory University — Oakton, VA (Oakton)
Jonathan Jemison — Emory University — Marietta, GA (Lassiter)
Emory University seniors Adrien Bouchet and Jonathan Jemison captured the Division III doubles championship at the ITA Cup. The unseeded duo closed out a three-match run with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the New England Regional champions from Bowdoin College. They opened the weekend with a win over second-seeded and defending champions Tyler Raclin and Jeremy Yuan of University of Chicago. Jemison reached the semifinal round and finished third in singles.
Volleyball
Karissa Dzurik — Emory University — Columbia, PA (Hempfield)
Emory University senior Karissa Dzurik averaged 4.25 kills per set and hit .330 to lead the Eagles to a 4-0 record at the second UAA round robin. She hit .414 with 13 kills and just one error in the Eagles’ sweep of eighth-ranked University of Chicago, the Maroons’ only loss in Association play. Dzurik finished the weekend with 15 kills and a .433 hitting percentage in a sweep of ninth-ranked Washington University that earned the Eagles the top seed at the 2018 UAA Volleyball Championship.
Mady Arles — Emory University — Richmond, VA (St. Catherine’s School)
Emory University senior setter Mady Arles averaged 11.75 assists per set as the Eagles finished 4-0 at the second UAA round robin weekend at Carnegie Mellon University to earn the top seed at the 2018 UAA Volleyball Championship. She also hit .424 with 16 kills and contributed five blocks. Arles dished out 40 assists in the Eagles’ sweep of eighth-ranked University of Chicago and 30 assists, six kills, and six digs in a sweep of ninth-ranked Washington University.
Women’s Swimming and Diving
Christy Taylor — Emory University — Valencia, CA (Valencia)
Sophomore Christy Taylor secured two individual event wins and swam on a victorious relay as Emory University defeated Birmingham-Southern College in the season opener on Saturday. She swept the 50- (24.74 seconds) and 100-yard (53.45 seconds) freestyle events and swam the butterfly leg (1:49.67) of the 200-yard medley relay.
Katie Kushner — Emory University — New Canaan, CT (New Canaan)
Emory University sophomore Katie Kushner won both diving events as the Eagles topped Birmingham-Southern College in the season opener on Saturday. She scored 242.18 on the one-meter board and scored 221.25 in the three-meter event.
Men’s Swimming and Diving
Trey Kolleck — Emory University — Newburgh, IN (Castle)
Senior Trey Kolleck posted two solo event wins and swam the anchor leg on two relay victories in Emory University’s season-opening win over Birmingham-Southern College. He swept the sprint freestyles, winning the 50- (21.10 seconds) and 100-yard (47.15 seconds) freestyle events, and led the Eagles to first-place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay (1:35.71) and 200-yard freestyle relay (1:25.64).
Lucas Bumgarner — Emory University — Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)
Freshman Lucas Bumgarner won one dive and finished second in another in a season-opening Emory University win over Birmingham-Southern College. He finished first on the three-meter board (322.50 pts.) and earned a runner-up finish in the one-meter event (288.00 pts.).

UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
