Athletes of the Week for October 17, 2022

Women’s Cross Country

Annika Urban  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Fox Chapel)

Senior Annika Urban earned her fourth individual title in as many races at the University of Alabama Birmingham Blazer Classic, leading Emory University to a fifth-place finish in the 16-team meet. She paced the field of 149 runners with a six-kilometer time of 20:44.50. Urban was one of two competitors to register a time under 21 minutes, the other being a runner from NCAA Division I University of Memphis.

Men’s Cross Country

Jeff Candell  —  Washington University  —  Arlington, MA (Arlington)

Senior Jeff Candell of Washington University ran a personal-best time of 24:17.2 at the Augustana College Interregional Invitational, which featured three of the top four teams in NCAA Division III. He placed 19th out of 276 runners to lead the Bears to a fourth-place finish.

Men’s Golf

Nicholas Nautiyal  —  Emory University  —  Portland, OR (Oregon Episcopal)

Sophomore Nicholas Nautiyal placed second at the Piedmont University Invitational, leading Emory University to the team title. He shot a career-low round of 67 in the second round to post a two-day total of 148. The Eagles finished six shots ahead of the runner-up.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Cecilia Dieterich  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  South Paris, ME (Oxford)

Carnegie Mellon University junior midfielder Cecilia Dieterich played a part in both goals as the Tartans recorded back-to-back 1-0 victories at University of Chicago and Washington University, the first road weekend Midwest sweep in program history. She scored off a free kick in the 74th minute against the Maroons and assisted on the game-winner in the 56th minute against the Bears.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Gabby Sabatier  —  University of Rochester  —  Cherry Hills Village, CO (Cherry Creek)

University of Rochester first-year goalkeeper Gabby Sabatier posted a pair of shutouts in Yellowjacket wins over Brandeis University and NYU. She made five saves in a 1-0 win over the Judges in her third career start and then made three more stops in a 1-0 victory over the Violets.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Arkan Tahsildaroglu  — NYU  —  Istanbul, Turkey (Berkshire School, MA)

NYU junior forward Arkan Tahsildaroglu scored late goals in two games, giving the Violets a win and a draw in UAA road play. He assisted on the first two goals and then scored the game-winner with under one minute to play (89:13) in a 3-2 win at Emory University on Friday. Tahsildaroglu scored off a corner kick at 83:18 as the Violets played University of Rochester to a 1-1 draw.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Santino Lupica-Tondo  —  University of Rochester —  Weston, FL (Cypress Bay)

University of Rochester junior goalkeeper Santino Lupica-Tondo made a combined 10 saves in a 1-0-1 UAA weekend for the Yellowjackets. He stopped four shots to register the shutout in a 1-0 victory over Brandeis University on Friday and made six stops in a 1-1 draw with NYU on Sunday.

Women’s Tennis

Sylwia Mikos  —  University of Chicago  —  Willowbrook, IL (Hinsdale South)

Sophomore Sylwia Mikos of University of Chicago captured the Division III singles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup. She won all four of her matches, including a pair over UAA opponents. Mikos dropped the first set in the final against her Massachusetts Institute of Technology opponent before rebounding for a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory. She and Shianna Guo reached the semifinals in doubles play.

Men’s Tennis

James Hopper  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Montgomery, NJ (Montgomery)
Vishwa Aduru  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Austin, TX (Liberal Arts & Science Academy)

Senior James Hopper and junior Vishwa Aduru of Case Western Reserve University captured the Division III doubles title at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Cup. The duo won all four of their matches, coming from behind in the final against their Tufts University opponents to record a 5-7, 6-4, 10-3 victory. Hopper also won the title with Matthew Chen in 2019.

Volleyball

Kalli Wall  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Mason, OH (William Mason)

Case Western Reserve University first-year outside hitter Kalli Wall hit .277 with 2.77 kills per set as the Spartans went 3-0, including UAA wins over Carnegie Mellon University and fourth-ranked Washington University. She hit .308 with 16 kills and four blocks in a five-set victory over the Tartans (17-15 in the final set) and added 13 kills and three blocks in a five-set win over the Bears (15-13 in the final set).

Lindsey Hirano  —  NYU  —  South Pasadena, CA (South Pasadena)

Sophomore libero Lindsey Hirano averaged 6.0 digs and 1.23 assists per set as NYU finished 3-1 in a weekend in which the Violets faced three nationally ranked opponents. She posted a weekend-best 32 digs in a four-set victory over ninth-ranked University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, while totaling 25 digs and 10 assists in a four-set win over Swarthmore College.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Bailey Gold  —  Brandeis University  —  Berkeley Heights, NJ (Governor Livingston)

Senior Bailey Gold contributed to four of 10 Brandeis University wins at the Hartwick College Relays. She swam the butterfly legs of the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.98), 400-yard medley relay (4:09.58), and the 800-yard medley relay (9:13.95). Gold also swam the leadoff leg of the winning 300-yard relay (3:07.39).

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Sam Dienstag  —  Brandeis University  —  Wilmette, IL (New Trier)

Junior Sam Dienstag contributed to four of eight Brandeis University wins at the Hartwick College Relays. He swam the opening leg of the 400-yard freestyle (3:19.53) and 800-yard freestyle (8:21.98) relays. Dienstag anchored the 850-yard freestyle relay (7:41.01) and swam the second leg of the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:28.47).

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
