Athletes of the Week for October 24, 2022

Women’s Golf

Sharon Mun  —  Emory University  —  Duluth, GA (Lambert)

Emory University sophomore Sharon Mun captured her second individual title this season at the Golfweeek DIII Invitational. She posted a 54-hole total of 210 (71-69-70) to help the Eagles win their second tournament of the season in a field that included five other top-10 ranked teams. Mun shot four-under par on par five’s and recorded 42 pars.

Men’s Golf

Michael Burry  —  Emory University  —  Saratoga, CA (Saratoga)

Emory University sophomore Michael Burry led the Eagles in scoring for his third consecutive tournament, tying for third at the Golfweeek DIII Invitational. He totaled 11 birdies in shooting a career-best three-round score of 212 (70-67-75) to lead the Eagles to the team title in a field with five other teams ranked inside the top-10.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Bailey Cullen  —  Brandeis University  —  Connellsville, PA (Greensburg Central Catholic)

Graduate transfer Bailey Cullen recorded a hat trick to lead Brandeis University to a 5-3 win over University of Southern Maine on Sunday. She scored goals in the 35th, 51st, and 64th minutes, while also assisting on a goal in the seventh minute just 12 seconds after the Judges fell behind 1-0. Brandeis snapped the Huskies’ 12-match winning streak.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Laura Gorjanc  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Mayfield Village, OH (Hawken)

Senior defender Laura Gorjanc played 62 minutes on the Case Western Reserve University backline that did not allow a shot in an 11-0 drubbing of Asbury University on Friday. The fourth-ranked Spartans set a program record with their 13th consecutive victory.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Sancho Maroto Tobias  — Brandeis University  —  Acton, MA (Lexington)

Senior transfer Sancho Maroto Tobias netted both Brandeis University goals in a 2-0 victory over St. Joseph’s College of Maine. He scored in the 38th and 72nd minutes as the Judges snapped St. Joseph’s seven-match winning streak. 

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Keirnan Skelly  —  Emory University  —  Newnan, GA (The Heritage School)

Freshman Keirnan Skelly improved to 3-0 in goal this season as Emory University topped regionally-ranked Roanoke College, 2-1. He made three saves, all in the final 20 minutes of the game, including a diving stop on a free kick from the top of the box with one minute remaining.

Volleyball

Olivia Lewandowski  —  NYU  —  San Diego, CA (Del Norte)

NYU sophomore Olivia Lewandowski averaged 3.1 kills per set with a .403 hitting percentage as the Violets finished last week 3-0 with a pair of wins over regionally ranked opponents. She recorded 13 kills without an error in 22 attacks (.591 hitting percentage) in a four-set win over Stevens Institute of Technology, then recorded 12 kills and eight digs in a sweep of Kean University.

Stella Yan  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Coppell, TX (Coppell)

Carnegie Mellon University senior setter averaged 11.43 assists, including recording a career-best 60 in one match, and surpassed the 2,000 career assists in a 3-1 week for the Tartans. She averaged 15.0 assists per set in the Tartans’ four-set win over Thiel College. Yan averaged 11.75 assists in a four-set win over regionally ranked Smith College and totaled 13 digs in a loss to second-ranked Juniata College.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Megan Jungers  —  Emory University  —  Great Falls, VA (Langley)

Emory University junior Megan Jungers provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship in the 100-yard backstroke in the Eagles’ dual meet victory over Birmingham-Southern College. Her time of 56.01 in the event is second-fastest in NCAA Division III this season. Jungers also won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:05.36, which ranks third in Division III this season.

Veronica Fong  —  University of Chicago  —  West Vancouver, Canada (West Vancouver Secondary)

University of Chicago first-year diver Veronica Fong swept the diving events in the Maroons’ dual meet win over Illinois Institute of Technology. She met the NCAA regional qualifying score in the three-meter event with a score of 275.79 points and finished first on the one-meter board with a mark of 252.67.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Garrett Clasen  —  University of Chicago  —  Aurora, IL (Batavia)

University of Chicago junior Garrett Clasen won a pair of individual events in a dual meet win at Wheaton College. His time of 1:41.61 in the 200-yard freestyle ranks third in NCAA Division III this season, while his winning time of 50.30 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly ranks sixth. Clasen swam the second leg on the victorious 200-yard medley relay team (1:32.97) that ranks eighth in Division III this season.

Lucas Bumgarner  —  Emory University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Mt. Lebanon)

Emory University senior Lucas Bumgarner swept both diving events in the Eagles’ dual meet with Birmingham-Southern College. He recorded NCAA Division III regional qualifying times with scores of 371.5 points on the one-meter board and 353.30 points in the three-meter event.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
