Athletes of the Week for November 7, 2022

Men’s Golf

Michael Burry  —  Emory University  —  Saratoga, CA (Saratoga)

Emory University sophomore Michael Burry finished in sixth place at the O’Briant Jensen Memorial after carding a one-under par 141. He paced the Eagles in scoring for the fourth consecutive tournament with his rounds of 72 and 69. Emory finished fifth in the team standings.

Women’s Soccer – Offense

Jamie Goldfarb  —  Case Western Reserve University —  Whitehouse Station, NJ (Hunterdon Central)

First-year midfielder Jamie Goldfarb netted the only goal as fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University defeated seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, 1-0, to capture its first UAA women’s soccer title in program history. She headed the ball past the diving goalkeeper off a free kick by senior defender Elizabeth White in the sixth minute.

Women’s Soccer – Defense

Maggie Storti  —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Cranberry Township, PA (Oakland Catholic)

Junior goalkeeper Maggie Storti earned her 17th career shutout as fourth-ranked Case Western Reserve University defeated seventh-ranked Carnegie Mellon University, 1-0, to capture its first UAA women’s soccer title. Storti allowed just four goals and earned four shutouts in seven Association matches.

Men’s Soccer – Offense

Alex Lippiatt  — Case Western Reserve University  —  Westlake Village, CA (Oaks Christian)

Junior defender Alex Lippiatt scored one goal and assisted on another as 24th-ranked Case Western Reserve University defeated Carnegie Mellon University, 3-2, to finish second in the UAA this season. He scored the tying goal in the 44th minute and netted the eventual game-winner on a free kick from about 45 yards out in the 68th minute.

Men’s Soccer – Defense

Griffin Wada  —  University of Chicago  —  Villanova, PA (The Haverford School)

Senior center back Griffin Wada anchored the back line to lead second-ranked University of Chicago to a 1-0 victory over Washington University as the Maroons completed an undefeated regular season and the outright UAA title. The Maroon defense limited the Bears to three shots total with one on goal.

Volleyball

Carly Wallace  —  Emory University  —  Los Angeles, CA (Harvard-Westlake)

Emory University junior Carly Wallace averaged 4.40 kills and 2.20 digs per set, while hitting at a .269 clip, as the fourth-seeded Eagles dropped only one set in winning three matches to capture their third UAA title in the past four championships. She totaled 19 kills and 10 digs in a four-set win over defending Association champion and top-seeded NYU in the semifinals. Wallace hit .500 with 14 kills and added seven digs as the Eagles swept second-seeded Washington University in the final.

Lauren Bandera  —  Emory University  —  Pembroke Pines, FL (Archbishop McCarthy)

Emory University senior Lauren Bandera recorded double-digit digs in all three matches as the fourth-seeded Eagles earned their third UAA title in the past four championships. She registered 21 digs in a four-set win over defending Association champion and top-seeded NYU in the semifinals. Bandera collected 14 digs each in sweeps of fifth-seeded Case Western Reserve University in the quarterfinals and second-seeded Washington University in the final.

Women’s Swimming and Diving

Caitlin Marshall  —  NYU  —  Noblesville, IN (Noblesville)

NYU sophomore Caitlin Marshall swam the fastest time in NCAA Division III this season in the 200-yard butterfly as the Violets hosted their fall invitational. She won the race in 2:04.73 and she also placed first in the 500-yard freestyle (5:04.20), which ranks sixth in Division III this season.

Veronica Fong  — University of Chicago  —  West Vancouver, Canada (West Vancouver Secondary)

University of Chicago first-year diver Veronica Fong exceeded the NCAA regional qualifying marks in both events at the Maroons’ D3 Shootout. She finished first on the one-meter dive (287.15 points) and the three-meter board (275.80). The Maroons placed first in the eight-team field.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Jesse Ssengonzi  — University of Chicago  —  Cary, NC (Green Hope)

University of Chicago junior Jesse Ssengonzi provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships in two individual events and one relay as the Maroons took first place in the eight-team field as hosts of the D3 Shootout. He posted the third-fastest time in Division III this season in winning the 200-yard butterfly (1:49.95) and the fourth-fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly (48.55 seconds). Ssengonzi also swam on the nation’s fastest 400-yard medley relay that won in 3:17.30.

Alex McCormick  —  Washington University  —  Crown Point, IN (Crown Point)

Washington University junior Alex McCormick broke his own meet record, provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Swimming and Diving Championships, and swam the fastest Division III time this season in the 200-yard backstroke at the University of Chicago D3 Shootout. He won the event with a time of 1:47.08. McCormick earned a runner-up finish in the 100-yard backstroke (50.08 seconds) with the nation’s third-fastest time this season.

Hunter Whitbeck  —  NYU  —  Acton, MA (Acton-Boxborough Regional)

NYU senior Hunter Whitbeck swept the diving events at the Violets’ fall invitational. He totaled 289.05 points on the one-meter board and captured the three-meter event with a score of 280.43.

Wrestling

Cooper Pontelandolfo  —  NYU  —  Marlton, NJ (Kingsway Regional)

NYU sophomore Cooper Pontelandolfo captured the 165-pound bracket at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by The King’s College. He defeated all four of his opponents, allowing just one point with two technical falls and one fall. NYU placed second in the 11-team meet.

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
