Athletes of the Week for December 10, 2018

Women’s Basketball

Leah Weslock  —  Carnegie Mellon University  —  Howell, MI (Howell)

First-year guard Leah Weslock recorded her fist career double-double in a 93-56 Carnegie Mellon University win over Allegheny College. She connected on seven of nine field goals, hitting all three of her 3-point attempts, to score a season-high 18 points. Weslock grabbed a season-best 10 rebounds, including six offensive boards, and added a pair of assists.

Madeline Homoly  —  Washington University  —  Kansas City, MO (Bishop Miege)

Senior forward Madeline Homoly averaged 17.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game as Washington University split two games. She recorded double-doubles in each game, while shooting 48.4 percent from the field. Homoly contributed two assists, two steals, and two blocks.

Men’s Basketball

Antonio Ionadi — Case Western Reserve University  —  Pittsburgh, PA (Hampton)

Sophomore guard Antonio Ionadi averaged 21.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game his first two starts of the season in two Case Western Reserve University victories. He hit 52.2. percent of his field goal attempts (12-of-23), 55.0 percent from three-point range (11-for-20), and made all eight of his free throws. Ionadi hit six 3-pointers and netted a career-high 24 points in an 80-57 Spartans’ win over Kalamazoo College.

Matthew Schner — Emory University  —  Boca Raton, FL (Grandview Prep)

Sophomore Matt Schner scored a season-high 24 points and pulled down nine rebounds in a 96-87 Emory University victory over LaGrange College. He hit nine of 13 field goals, including three 3-pointers in five attempts, and sank three free throws. Schner tied his season-high total with nine rebounds, adding three steals and two assists.

Men’s Swimming and Diving

Daniel Wohl  — Brandeis University  —  Chapel Hill, NC (East Chapel Hill)

Brandeis University sophomore Daniel Wohl won three freestyle events in the Judges’ dual meet loss at Colby College. He captured the 50- (22.22 seconds), 100- (48.72 seconds), and 200-yard (1:44.71) freestyles.

 

Women’s Indoor Track and Field

Julie Hines —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Elbridge, NY (Jordan-Elbridge)

Case Western Reserve University sophomore Julie Hines ran the second-fastest time in the UAA in the 400-meter dash (1:00.97) at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker on Friday. She also posted a time of 27.37 seconds in the 200-meter dash.

Cassandra Laois —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Worthington, OH (Thomas Worthington)

Case Western Reserve University graduate student Cassandra Laios produced the fifth-best weight throw in NCAA Division III in the early season with a runner-up finish at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker on Friday. Her mark of 16.90 meters ranks first in the UAA. Laios added a fifth-place finish in the shot put with a distance of 12.79 meters.

Men’s Indoor Track and Field

Jonathan Haling —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Gates Mills, OH (Mayfield)

Junior Jonathan Haling posted the fifth-fastest time in NCAA Division III in the early season in the 400-meter dash at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker on Friday. He crossed the finish line in 49.50 seconds, the top UAA time this season, to place eighth.

Ananth Suresh —  Case Western Reserve University  —  Singapore (St. Joseph’s Institution)

Senior Ananth Suresh earned a ninth-place finish in the triple jump at the Youngstown State University Icebreaker on Friday. He recorded a mark of 12.69 meters, tops in the UAA early season

Wrestling

Jason Crary  —  University of Chicago  —  Munster, IN (Munster)

University of Chicago sophomore Jason Crary captured the 157-pound title at the North Central College Invitational. He won two matches by pin and one by decision before taking the championship match with an 11-2 major decision over his opponent from Olivet College.

 

Athlete of the Week selections are drawn from nominees submitted by member institution coaches and sports information directors. UAA Athletes of the Week are selected in each sport in which the UAA sponsors competition. They are selected on the basis of their individual performances and contributions to team efforts during the past week in both Association and non-Association competition.
