Women's tennis gets into win column, 8-1, over Wellesley

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team broke into the win column for this season today with an 8-1 victory over local rival Wellesley College in a match played indoors at the Gosman Athletic Center. The Judges improve to 1-2 on the campaign, while the Blue fall to 0-1.

The Judges opened strong with a doubles sweep. First-years Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii / Punahou School) and Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India / Kumkum School) opened the scoring at #1 with an 8-2 win over Melina Alviar and Annissa Mu. The sophomore duo of Nikita Salkar (Mumbai, India / Mourataglou Tennis Academy) and Jiayi Zhang (Shanghai, China / Shanghai International) earned an 8-3 victory at #3 over Cristiana DeAgazio and Hannah Kimura. Senior Ana Hatfield (Rockford, Ill. / Boylan Central Catholic) and sophomore Ella Subramanian (Parkland, Fla. / Laurel Springs) completed the sweep at #2, 8-5, over Libby Chang and Michaela Markwart.

In singles action, the Judges took two of three matches in the first round to clinch the win.  Salkar knocked off Alviar, 6-1, 6-3, for the fourth point at #3, and Parwani defeated Markwart, 6-3, 6-2, at #1 to clinch the victory. Wellesley picked up their first point at #2, where Mu outlasted Hatfield, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In the second set of singles matches, Loui rolled past Chang, 6-0, 6-3, at #4. First-year Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece / Anatolia College) defeated Kimura, 6-4, 6-3, at #6 singles. Subramanian closed out the victory at #5 by coming from behind to defeat DeAgazio, 3-6, 7-5, 10-4.

Brandeis returns to action on Monday, February 21st, when they head to the West Coast to meet Caltech on their February break trip.
