Women’s Volleyball Tops Case Western Reserve in Five Set Thriller

BEREA, Ohio – The Baldwin Wallace women's volleyball hosted Case Western Reserve University for non-conference matchup at the Lou Higgins Center inside Ursprung Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets topped the Spartans in five sets by scores of 23-25, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 15-12.

BW dropped in set one to the Spartans by just two points before rallying back in the next set, dominating Case Western Reserve by a 25-15. The Yellow Jackets posted 15 kills and hit .293 as a team in set two. BW fell in set three to the Spartans before again coming back in vengeance to earn the fourth set win, 25-22.

The Yellow Jackets got the quick 6-2 jump in the fifth set forcing the Spartans to take their first timeout. Case Western Reserve then battled back to tie the set 9-9, forcing a BW timeout. A huge kill by senior First Team All-OAC performer and Academic All-OAC outside hitter Ivy Earl (Howell, Mich.) and a service ace by senior defensive specialist Angela Dunn (Fairview Park/Fairview) earned BW the two-point advantage, forcing Case Western Reserve to take its second and final timeout.

The Spartans came back on the Yellow Jackets once again to tie the game at 12-12, before BW tallied three points in a row to grab the huge five-set win (15-12). The Yellow Jackets improve to 7-3 overall, extending their win streak to six matches, and Case Western Reserve drops to a 4-5 overall record.

BW was led by Earl who totaled 18 kills, 15 digs, and three service aces. Having standout performances on offensive were junior Academic All-OAC middle hitter Isa Luciano (Willoughby/South) who posted a career and season-high 16 kills and hit .302 and freshman right side hitter Allison Weiner (Columbus/St. Francis DeSales) who finished with a season-high 16 kills and hit .262. Luciano also added four total blocks.

Freshman setter Lauren Reid (Canonsburg, Pa./Upper Saint Clair) dished out a season-high 60 assists and tallied eight digs. Senior All-OAC performer and Academic All-OAC outside hitter Cecelia Hamisch (Union/Northmont) finished with 15 kills for BW. Freshman libero Lauren Gardner (Cleveland/Saint Joseph) posted 32 digs for the Yellow Jackets while senior Academic All-OAC defensive specialist Morgan Martin (Seven Hills/Trinity) added a 17-dig total.

The Yellow Jackets are back in action on Saturday, September 18 as BW travels to Adrian, Mich. for a non-conference matchup at the Merillat Sport and Fitness Center starting at 11:00 AM.
