Despite an all-around great performance from senior Allison Chernow, the Emory University women's basketball team fell in overtime to Washington University in St. Louis, 85-83, Sunday afternoon.
With the defeat, the Eagles drop back into a tie for second place in the league standings at 5-2 in the UAA and 14-4 overall. The Bears have now won two in a row, pushing their overall ledger to 10-8 and 3-4 in conference play.
Chernow sank a three-pointer with four seconds remaining in regulation that sent the game into overtime and scored Emory's final five points of the contest which came on another three-pointer with 1:47 to go in overtime and a pair of free throws that put the Eagles up 83-82 with 23 left on clock. However, late free throws clinched the home win for the Bears.
After a blocking call called on senior Lindsey Tse allowed WashU to take the one-point lead at 84-83 with 11 seconds to play, the ball was placed back into the hands of Chernow to try and make another clutch shot. Chernow made every effort to dribble around her defender inside the arc but the tough defense by the Bears' Samantha Weaver caused Chernow's last-ditch attempt to hit the front iron.
Chernow finished with a season-high 23 points (14 after halftime), eight rebounds and a game-high six assists. Senior Erin Lindahl posted 16 points, 14 of which also coming in the second half and overtime, while collecting seven rebounds. Sophomore Tori Huggins tallied her seventh double-double of the campaign, totaling 16 points and a team-high 10 boards.
WashU was led by the trio of Molly Gannon, Kristina Schmelter and Maya Arnott who contributed to 62 of the team's 85 points. Gannon recorded a career-high 24 points thanks to five successful three-pointers. Schmelter had a double-double with 21 points and a game-high 11 rebounds while Arnott turned in 17 points and eight rebounds. Sammi Matoush put forth a solid game as well, chipping in eight points, six rebounds and a team-high six assists.
The Eagles look to bounce back during turnover weekend as Chicago and WashU visit Atlanta on February 7th and 9th.
