Emory Men's Soccer Ties #11 Washington & Lee, 1-1, in Home Opener

The Emory University men's soccer team battled the 11th-ranked Washington & Lee University Generals to a 1-1 draw in front of a large capacity crowd Friday night at the Woodruff PE Center in Atlanta, GA.

The scoring began in the 26th minute as WLU took advantage of an Emory turnover. Michael Kutsanzira stole a pass from senior keeper Jack Hudson just outside the box. Kutsanzira dribbled in on the right side, avoided a defender and finding Adrian Zimmerman in the middle of the box where he scored off a touch.

Senior Will Tichy nearly evened the score with the Eagles' best scoring threat of the first half as he skied a shot over the crossbar from just inside the box in the 43rd minute.

Senior Josh Berman and junior Madison Conduah had equally close chances to tie the score in the early goings of the second half but were denied. Berman ripped a header off a Tichy corner kick in the 51st minute but his attempt was stopped by WLU's Michael Nyc. A few moments late in the 61st, Conduah shot through a crowded box but his drilled the crossbar.

Emory finally broke through to the scoring column in the 65th minute as junior Alejandro Gomez knotted the game at one as he timed an Alex Mills pass perfectly, scoring on a header.

After remaining scoreless for the rest of regulation, Berman appeared to have a golden opportunity in the closing seconds of the first extra period, however his point blank shot just missed wide right to send the game into a second overtime.

Zimmerman had a chance to win for the visitors in overtime number two but his shot from far range hit the post in the 104th minute. And on the game's final possession, Nyc stopped a shot from close range off the foot of senior Charlie Scruton to preserve the draw.

For the game, the two sides were fairly balanced with Emory leading 20-18 in shots and 10-4 in shots on goal. Berman and Tichy each had three shots apiece with Berman and Scruton leading the Eagles with two shots on goals each. Hudson made three saves for the Eagles while his counterpart Nyc made nine saves.

The 2021 Sonny Carter Invitational continues on Saturday as the Generals oppose Oglethorpe University at the WoodPEC then on Sunday, the tournament concludes with the Eagles taking on the Stormy Petrels at Oglethorpe. Kickoff for both contests is set for 7:00 PM.
