CMS to Host East-West Battle on Friday and Saturday

CLAREMONT, Calif. - The Claremont-Mudd-Scripps volleyball team will serve as the host of the annual East-West Battle on Friday and Saturday, with 12 matches taking place on two courts over the two-day span involving a loaded field of six current nationally ranked teams and five former national championship programs. 

The Athenas, currently ranked No. 2 in the country, will play in three of them, with its opening match against No. 14 WashU on Friday night at 6 p.m. On Saturday at 11:30 a.m., CMS will face No. 6 Trinity (Texas) in a rematch of the NCAA Regional Finals at Roberts Pavilion last year, which Trinity won in five sets (16-14 in the fifth) for the only loss the Athenas suffered in a 30-1 season. CMS will then close out the tournament on Saturday at 6 p.m. against Johns Hopkins, currently ranked No. 7. 

The eight-team tournament field also includes No. 12 Emory, No. 17 Tufts, Colorado College (receiving votes) and Cal Lutheran. The field includes the national champions from 2015 (Cal Lutheran), 2017 (CMS), 2018 (Emory) and 2019 (Johns Hopkins). WashU is also 10-time national champions, most recently winning in 2009, while Trinity was the runner-up a year ago.
