Volleyball splits tri-match at Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The Brandeis University volleyball was part of pair of sweeps today at Amherst College. The Judges snapped a six-match skid with a 25-19, 25-6, 25-6 victory over Worcester State in the opener, but fell to the home team, Amherst, 25-13, 25-10, 25-15. The Judges now sit at 2-7 on the season. WSU is 2-5, while Amherst is 5-0.

In the opener, Brandeis broke back into the win column by hitting .296 (31 kills-7 errors-81 total attacks) while holding the Lancers in the negative numbers at -.013 (17 K-18 E-79 TA). Junior Belle Scott (Portland, Ore./Oregon Episcopal School) led the Judge attack with 12 kills and just one error in 19 attempts for a .579 percentage. She also tied for match-high honors with eight digs and added three blocks (one solo). Senior Emma Bartlett (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) added nine kills and two blocks, while junior Marissa Borgert (Blaine, Minn./Spring Lake Park) had eight kills and eight assists. Rookie Talia Freund (La Jolla, Calif. / La Jolla) registered career-highs with 17 assists and eight digs.

In the next match against Amherst, the Judges were on the opposite end of the stick offensively, as the Mammoths outhit the visitors .380 (44 K-9 E-92 TA) to .040 (21 K-17 E-100 TA). Bartlett led the Brandeis offense with eight kills, while Scott finished with seven. Sophomore Kaitlyn Oh (Santa Clara, Calif./Cupertino) had 12 digs, while Freund added 13 assists. Sophomore Avery Donovan (Portland, Maine/Deering) had three blocks (one solo).

The Judges are back in action next weekend with the first of three University Athletic Association (UAA) round robins at home. Brandeis will take on top-ranked Emory and #10 Carnegie Mellon on Saturday and Rochester on Sunday.
