Turner One-Hitter Propels Maroons

The Lead: After winning the past two games in their last at bat, Roanoke would look to complete the three-game sweep of Case Western Reserve on Tuesday afternoon. The Maroons would get a one-hitter from the mound on their way to a 9-0 win over the Spartans to run their early season record to 6-4 and register their fourth win in as many days.  

Highlights:

  • A four-run bottom of the fourth would get started with a Mason Staz base hit. Conner Butler doubled to right field and would score on an Owen Lawn two-bagger to center. Jacob Bonzon would reach on an error and advance while Lawn scored ahead of a Carson McCusker RBI to make it 4-0.
  • Two innings later, Butler was hit by a pitch and scored on a triple to make it 5-0. Lawn was out trying to score on the throw. After reaching on an error, Luke Estep would score when a double-steal by he and Bonzon resulted in a throwing error. Bonzon later scored on a wild pitch as the Maroons had grown their lead to 7-0.
  • Single runs in the seventh and eight would make the final 9-0.
  • Will Turner didn't need much help as the right hander gave up just a bunt a bunt single on an afternoon that would see him give up one hit, two walks, and seven strikeouts on his way to a complete game shutout.
  • Butler was 2-3 with a pair of runs and two RBI. Lawn was 2-4 while Staz and PK Cocolis each went 2-5. The Maroons would steal four more bases bring their season total to 37.

Up next: Roanoke will open Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on Sunday when they make the trip to Lynchburg to face the Hornets in a double header.
