NYU Cancels Winter Varsity Sports

NYU Cancels Winter Varsity Sports

From NYU Athletics

With its continuing commitment to the health and the safety of students and staff at the forefront, New York University has decided to cancel the winter sports season for the 2020-21 academic year. Major factors in this decision included travel, lodging, testing protocols, indoor competition, practices, venue capacities, and the continued prevalence of the virus and the rising infection rates regionally and nationally.

Given this development, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming & diving, men's and women's fencing, men's and women's indoor track & field, and wrestling will not engage in intercollegiate competition. While we regret having to take this action, we plan to provide opportunities for conditioning, coaching, and other team activities during the spring semester, provided that public health guidance supports such activities.

This announcement follows a decision announced recently by the University Athletic Association (UAA), cancelling competition in winter sports hosted by the conference.

A decision about spring sports (baseball, softball, men's and women's outdoor track & field, men's volleyball, men's and women's golf, men's and women's tennis) will be made in early 2021.

Further details and specifics on the University's decision concerning Athletics, Recreation and Fitness can be accessed on the NYU Returns website.
