Emory University Swimming and Diving Graduate Clio Hancock Named UAA Representative for NCAA Woman of the Year Award

From Emory University Athletics

Former Emory University swimming standout Clio Hancock has been selected as the University Athletic Association's representative for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.

Rooted in Title IX, the NCAA Woman of the Year Award was established in 1991 to recognize graduating female student-athletes who have completed their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.

This past season Clio put forth one of her finest seasons to date as she led the Eagles women's swimming & diving program to a national runner-up finish as well as the University Athletic Association title. She was an All-American in all three individual events she competed in, placing second in the 200 Butterfly, fourth in the 400 IM and sixth in the 200 IM and adding an All-America finish as part of the Eagles 800 Freestyle Relay. At the UAA Championships, Hancock was an event champion in three events and was an All-UAA performer in a total of four events.

Away from the pool she was equally as impressive, capturing additional honors with CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team and CSCAA Scholar All-America First Team selections and became the second Eagle ever, in any sport, to be named the recipient of the prestigious NCAA Elite 90 Award as she carried a perfect 4.0 GPA as a double major in chemistry and anthropology.

For her career, Hancock was a nine-time All-American, two-time All-America Honorable Mention and was part of the team's national championship during the 2019 season. At the time of her graduation, she ranked as the second-fastest in team history in the 400 IM as well as the third-fastest in both the 200 Butterfly and 200 IM. She was a three-time CSCAA Scholar All-American and was honored as one of the Emory 100 Senior Honorary recipients.

All totaled, NCAA member schools nominated 577 female college athletes for the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year Award with conference offices submitting 151 nominees - 53 from Division I, 39 from Division II and 59 from Division III. Of the nominees selected, 17 different sports are represented with multisport student-athletes accounting for 42 of the nominees. The average GPA of this year's nominee pool is 3.8.

Conference offices selected up to two nominees each from their pool of member school nominees. All nominees who competed in a sport not sponsored by their school's primary conference, as well as associate conference nominees and independent nominees, were considered by a selection committee. Next, the Woman of the Year selection committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose the Top 30 honorees — 10 from each division.

From the Top 30, the Woman of the Year selection committee will determine the top three honorees in each division and announce nine finalists. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics then will choose the 2022 NCAA Woman of the Year, who will be named later this year.
