CWRU Athletics Partners with 2nd & 7 Foundation

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

The Case Western Reserve University Department of Physical Education and Athletics has partnered with the 2nd and 7 Foundation, creating community service opportunities for Spartan athletes to provide books, and read to elementary school students.

"I am extremely excited to join the hundreds of colleges and universities throughout the country in partnering with the 2nd and 7 Foundation's Tackling Illiteracy program," said CWRU's James C. Wyant Director of Athletics TJ Shelton. "Our Spartan student-athletes are great university ambassadors and have a tremendous opportunity to serve as role models to youth in the community."

Since the program's start in 1999, 2nd & 7 has donated over half a million books to kids in need. Founded by three former Ohio State football players, the organization engages thousands of college and high-school student-athlete volunteers across the country to inspire the next generation of readers and leaders.

CWRU athletes will be working with second-grade students at Roxboro Elementary School in nearby Cleveland Heights throughout the year. The Spartans recently participated in their first session, with softball players Elizabeth Berry, Carli Tucci, Devanghi Misra, Katelyn Lamm, and swimmer Tyler Ahten taking time to bring books and read to the students.

"I am thrilled we are partnering with Roxboro Elementary School and thank Principal Shelley Pulling and her willingness to serve as the location for the program," said Shelton. "I also want to thank the second-grade teachers, Malik Daniels and Monica Rogers, for allowing CWRU student-athletes to join the class to read to their students."
