The New York University men's fencing team won two of its five matches on the first day of competition at the University of Pennsylvania Invitational, which is being held Saturday and Sunday, January 18-19, in Philadelphia, PA.

The Violets, now 7-5 in dual meets this season, defeated the New Jersey Institute of Technology (18-9) and Haverford College (21-6), were edged 14-13 by a pair of NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) squads, Duke University and the University of North Carolina, and were also defeated by host U. Penn 17-10.

NYU's top performer of the day was freshman Darren Yen (Chatham, NJ/Chatham). Competing in sabre, he posted an overall record of 10-4, including perfect 3-0 marks against NJIT and Haverford. Senior captain Grant Williams (Atlanta, GA/The Galloway School) posted a 9-3 record in the weapon. 

In epee, junior captain Ian Sanders (Wilton, CT/Wilton) went 9-4, freshman Ian Adler (Malvern, PA/Great Valley) was 8-3 and sophomore Liam Carpenter (Bedford, MA/St. John's Prep) went 7-6

In foil, a pair of Violets four wins: freshmen Miles Field (Bronx, NY/Bronx H.S. of Science) (4-3) and Owen McKenna (New Hope, PA /Germantown Academy) (4-5).
