CWRU Shuts Out Capital for Fourth Consecutive Win

The Case Western Reserve University men's soccer team recorded its second consecutive shutout, defeating Capital University 1-0 at DiSanto Field in Cleveland on Saturday afternoon.

The Spartans improved to 4-0-0 on the season, while the Comets fell to 2-1-0. It was the third overall shutout this year for CWRU, who have allowed just one goal in four matches. The win also extends the team's unbeaten streak at DiSanto Field to 11 matches dating back to the 2021 season.

Senior midfielder Matt Vatne scored the lone goal of the contest in the 13th minute of play. Junior forward Brandon Kim collected the ball on the goal line just outside the six-yard box and lobbed it to Vatne. The senior quickly gained possession and shot the ball into the low outside post to put the Spartans ahead early in the match. It was the second goal of the season for Vatne and the 14th of his career. He leads the team so far this season with seven points on two goals and three assists. Kim earned his second career assist and first of the season on the play.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bradley Winter and the Spartan backline of seniors Jad OglesbyAlex LippiattJosh Cook, and Ryan Doughty, and junior Sawyer Dockal kept the Comets at bay throughout the match. CWRU allowed just five shots in the contest and only two on goal. Winter earned his second career shutout to improve to 4-0-0 on the season, saving both shots on target in the match.

Overall, Case Western Reserve held a 14-5 advantage in shots and 7-2 edge in shots on goal. The team also earned seven corner kicks and was called offside six times. Vatne had a match-high seven shots, with four on target.
