No. 22 CWRU Battles No. 5 John Carroll to Scoreless Draw

From Case Western Reserve University Athletics

For the third straight season, the men's soccer match between crosstown rivals Case Western Reserve University and John Carroll University ended in a draw. In a battle between two ranked teams on Wednesday night, the 22nd-ranked Spartans and fifth-ranked Blue Streaks played 90 scoreless minutes at Don Shula Stadium in University Heights, Ohio.

With the tie, both teams' records stand at 4-0-1. The 4-0-1 record is the best five-match start to a season for CWRU since the team won its first eight matches to begin the 2007 campaign.

Sophomore goalkeeper Bradley Winter earned his third shutout of the season, saving a career-high seven shots in the contest. Case Western Reserve has allowed just one goal this season, keeping opponents off the scoreboard for the last 324 minutes of play.

Both teams tallied 10 shots in the contest, though JCU put seven on frame compared to just one for CWRU. Sophomore midfielder Camden Larson, junior midfielder Lukas Dalakis, and junior forward Brandon Kim each had a team-high two shots, with seven Spartans trying for goal.

Case Western Reserve's lone shot on goal came off the foot of Larson in the 37th minute, as the sophomore midfielder's attempt on the bottom left corner of the goal was saved by the Blue Streak goalkeeper.

Early in the second half, Winter saved a shot in the lower right corner of the goal that led to a JCU corner kick. On the set piece, the sophomore goalkeeper again did not allow the ball past him and kept the match scoreless. The Blue Streaks had a final push in the final five minutes, earning a pair of corner kicks and registering two shots. One was saved by Winter and the final shot of the contest was off target.
