NYU Draws with Rutgers-Newark

From NYU Athletics

The New York University men's soccer team got off to a strong start, but could not hold the advantage drawing 2-2 against Brick City Classic host Rutgers-Newark University on Sunday in Newark.

NYU's Johannes Wolfram and Ahmed Ibrahim made the All Tournament Team.

The Violets' Arkan Tahsildaroglu opened the scoring at 4:17 with an unassisted goal shot into the lower left corner of the net.

The 1-0 lead remained throughout the first half as the NYU defense held it down with Violet keeper Chaz Bond making three saves. The Violets out-shot the Raider 9-5 in the opening half, with six on goal.

Eric Smits added a second for the Violets at 51:43, set up by Nathan Bennett to give them a 2-0 lead over the Raiders.

With 30 minutes left to play, the Raiders were able to get two goals back to even the score. The first goal came at 58:23 off a shot from Aslan Kat to make the score 2-1.

An unfortunate penalty came five minutes later at 62:39 when a Raiders player was taken down in the box. Jean Paul Solano stepped up and slotted the ball right into the back of the net to even the game at 2-2.

The rest of the game remained tied but very chippy with seven yellow cards being shown, five to the Violets and two to the Raiders.

With 10 minutes left in the game, NYU was forced to play a man down when Tahsildaroglu was shown a red card.

NYU out-shot Rutgers-Newark 20-13, 10-7 on goal, but it was not enough to secure the win.
