Rochester Battles Back From 1-0 Deficit For Second Win

Rochester Battles Back From 1-0 Deficit For Second Win

From University of Rochester Athletics

For the second-straight game, University of Rochester men's soccer roared back from an early, second-half deficit, coming back from down 1-0 in the second half against the Alvernia University Golden Wolves on Monday to pick up a 2-1 victory with a pair of second-half scores.

Neither team would get on the scoreboard in the first half, though both teams would have their chances, combining for nine first-half shots and five corner kicks.

Evan Bauer got things started for Alvernia with an early shot just 5:02 into the first half before Othman Belhseine forced Evan Solley to make one of his five saves on the afternoon.

Belhseine would fire another shot in the 19th minute before Avi Lamba nearly made it 1-0, but Solley made another save to keep the game scoreless.

In the 31st minute following a Rochester corner, Gavin Fischer sent a blast at Solley, but again the Golden Wolves keeper made a save, keeping UR off the scoreboard.

Alvernia would get a couple more shots off in the final few minutes, but neither would threaten Santino Lupica-Tondo, and the two sides would go into the half still scoreless.

But seven minutes into the second half, Gabe Wunderlich would give the Golden Wolves a 1-0 lead, as Ryan Cogill stretched UR's defense and found Wunderlich open in the box, and the senior put the ball in the back of the net to give Alvernia the lead.

The 'Jackets would then press forward offensively as they looked for the equalizer, with a shot from Matt Consentino in the 59th minute going wide, while a header from Tyler Moran off a corner was just high.

But in the 68th minute, with the Golden Wolves unable to fully clear the ball following a Yellowjacket corner, Nick Swanger found Elijose Araujo in the box, and the sophomore beat the keeper to knot the score at one-all.

A little over eight minutes later, the Yellowjackets looked to take the lead, but Solley saved one of Belhseine's game-high four shots on the day, keeping the two sides level at one goal apiece.

The Golden Wolves would then take the ball the other way, with Evan Case forcing one of three Lupica-Tondo saves on the afternoon, and the follow from Cristian Topovich went off the post.

In the 82nd minute, Ashton Prescott found some open space and sent one at Solley, who made another save, while Moran sent another just high and wide.

Finally, though, in the 86th minute, with UR continuing to keep up the pressure, offensively, Lamba found some space dribbling down the left sideline and then found Belhseine in the box, who bounced it past Solley to give UR a 2-1 advantage.

And that lead would hold the rest of the way, with Rochester's defense holding Alvernia without a shot over the final 9:11 of the second half to finish off the 2-1, comeback victory.

UR moves to 2-0 with the win, while the Golden Wolves fall to 1-1 with the loss.

Belhseine led the 'Jackets with four shots and a goal, while Araujo added the other score and Lamba and Swanger each notched an assist.

Defensively, Lupica-Tondo made three saves, while Rochester outshot Alvernia, 12-11, and 7-4 on goal. Both teams also tallied four corners, with the Yellowjackets holding the Golden Wolves to just one in the second half.
