Ashton Prescott’s Late Score Helps Rochester Earn Draw Versus RIT

From University of Rochester Athletics

After the Rochester Institute of Technology scored two goals in the final 10 minutes to take the lead, the University of Rochester men's soccer scored an 88th-minute goal on a sensational free kick by sophomore Ashton Prescott to level to score and earn a 3-3 draw on a rainy Tuesday evening at Edwin Fauver Stadium.

With both the Yellowjackets and Tigers looking to keep their unblemished records on the season, RIT got the first shot off of the night, forcing Santino Lupica-Tondo to make his first of seven saves in the fourth minute.

But after RIT's Rom Wasserman's shot went wide, the 'Jackets got things going offensively, and on a throw-in from Kol Bassuk just under five minutes into the match, took a 1-0 lead.

Bassuk's throw-in wasn't fully cleared by the RIT defense and made its way to Tyler Moran, who fired a one-timer into the back of the net out of the reach of Jason Trapp to give Rochester a 1-0 lead just 4:43 into the first half.

And it wouldn't take long for Rochester to add to their tally, as just under eight minutes later, the Tigers' defense took down Santi Ponce Ocampo as the senior drove into the box, giving UR a penalty kick.

Ashton Prescott would then fire a laser into the top-left corner of the net, scoring his second penalty-kick goal of the season to extend Rochester's lead to 2-0.

Rochester would then look to make it 3-0 in the 19th minute, with Moran's shot going wide, followed by Ponce Ocampo finding Prescott in space, but the sophomore's left-footed shot was saved by Trapp.

Quickly though, RIT began to turn the tide, with three blocked shots in a row by Randy Dickersbach, Joshua Price and Joe Moon, before Tate Pottle got the Tigers on the scoreboard and cut UR's lead in half.

In the 24th minute, after Moon's initial shot was blocked, Dickersbach tried a bicycle kick and instead hit it over to Pottle, who settled it with his chest and fired it into the right corner of the net, past the diving arms of Lupica-Tondo to cut UR's lead to 2-1.

And the Tigers would keep the shots coming, forcing Lupica-Tondo to make three more first-half saves, including a pair of diving stops on free kick attempts from the Tigers.

Lupica-Tondo smothered Moon's long-range attempt in the 31st minute and added another save on Adam Eastman's attempt in the 34th minute.

The Tigers would send one more that Lupica-Tondo would have to save in the 42nd minute, a leaping grab by the senior, before UR added two shots of their own before the final buzzer, including one by Moran which forced a save.

The Yellowjackets would head into the half up 2-1, but the Tigers would keep the pressure on in the second half, outshooting UR, 8-7 in the final period after putting up 11 shots, to just seven for the 'Jackets, in the first half.

The Tigers picked up three early corners in the second half, as Pottle's 55th-minute shot was blocked, while Joe Anderson sent one wide for Rochester in the 54th minute.

Avi Lamba forced another Trapp save in the 70th minute, firing a loose ball off a UR corner kick at the RIT keeper, but Trapp knocked it away with one of his five saves on the night.

Things still stood at 2-1 in favor of the Yellowjackets until the 82nd minute, when after a long ball sent into the box, Jake Donahue attempted a bicycle kick that caromed off Dickersbach's head into the back of the net to level the score at two-all.

And then a little over three minutes later, RIT found another score, taking the lead as Price settled a ball headed into the box and laced it past a diving Lupica-Tondo to take a 3-2 lead.

Rochester then looked to answer, sending numbers forward following a yellow card on RIT, giving the 'Jackets a free kick from about 40 yards out.

Prescott though, would need any help on the free kick, as the sophomore curled a sensational free-kick goal past the outstretched arms of Trapp into the top-left corner of the net to even the score at 3-3 with less than three minutes to play.

RIT though, would quickly take things back the other way, looking to continue a final 10 minutes that had already seen three scorers.

Donahue corralled a loose ball in the box and forced another diving save by Lupica-Tondo to keep the two sides level in the 89th minute. While the senior was forced to make another in the 90th minute, sending away Dickersbach's free-kick attempt from a dangerous spot with 10 seconds left, before RIT's last-ditch corner fell short, and the game ended with the two sides level at three.

UR moves to 3-0-1 with the draw, while RIT picks up their second draw of the year, moving to 2-0-2.

Prescott had two goals on four shots to lead the 'Jackets, while Moran notched a team-high five shots. Bassuk tallied UR's lone assist of the night, while Lupica-Tondo made seven saves in goal for Rochester.
