Bears' Bernardo Neves Named to Academic All-America Team for Third Time

From Washington University Athletics

For the third time in his career, senior Bernardo Neves of the Washington University in St. Louis men's tennis team was named to the 2020 NCAA Division III Academic All-America At-Large First Team, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Neves was one of eight men's tennis players in NCAA Division III to earn CoSIDA Academic All-America honors. He graduated with a 3.99 grade point average while majoring in mechanical engineering.

"Another well-deserved accolade for Bernardo. Never heard an excuse or remembering him missing a practice/workout in four years on the Danforth campus," said WashU head coach Roger Follmer. "Bernardo has been a great role model for our men's tennis program and the WashU Department of Athletics."

Neves is the third student-athlete in WashU Men's Tennis program history to earn three Academic All-American citations joining Michael Doyle (1998-2000) and Isaac Stein (2009-11), and becomes the first player to receive first-team Academic All-America honors three times in a career.

He increases the men's tennis all-time Academic All-America honorees to 14, and is the 186th selection in WashU school history. WashU ranks third in Division III and seventh in all NCAA Divisions in Academic All-America selections.

Neves, an All-University Athletic Association (UAA) selection, compiled a 14-17 overall record while playing No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles in 2019-20. He finished the season ranked No. 36 nationally in singles.

A native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Neves concluded his four-year career ranked seventh in school history in wins (157), and is also sixth in singles (81) and 10th in doubles victories (76). He earned All-America honors in singles in 2018 and in both singles and doubles in 2019.

Neves was also a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-UAA selection.

To be eligible for nomination to the Academic All-America Team, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore in academic standing with at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA, and must be a starter or an important reserve.
