Maroons Shut Out Illinois Tech 5-0 in NCAA Second Round

In its opening match of the NCAA Division III Championship, the University of Chicago men's tennis team dispatched Illinois Institute of Technology 5-0 on Friday morning.

The No. 1-ranked Maroons improved to 18-1. The Scarlet Hawks wrapped up their season with a 12-10 overall record.

As the top seed in the NCAA bracket, UChicago received a first-round bye and made its postseason debut in Friday's second round against local opponent Illinois Tech. The two teams previously matched up on January 30, with the Maroons securing a 9-0 victory.

UChicago came out firing in doubles and swept all three positions. The No. 3 duo of junior Sachin Das and senior Alex Guzhva blanked their opponents 8-0. At No. 1 doubles, junior Christian Alshon and sophomore Derek Hsieh prevailed 8-1. The No. 2 tandem of junior Biren Reddy and first-year Andrei Leonov claimed an 8-3 win.

In singles action, the Maroons picked up two wins to end the match via decision. Junior Marek Michulka produced a shutout of his own 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. Then Das closed out the proceedings with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 3.
