University of Chicago's ninth-ranked and third-seeded men's tennis program defeated 24th-ranked and sixth-seeded Carnegie Mellon University in the opening round of the 2023 University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship on Friday morning.
The Maroons got off to a fast start, winning 2-of-3 doubles competitions over the Tartans. UChicago then clinched the match with three wins at singles to advance to Saturday's semifinal round, which will pit the Maroons against second-seeded WashU.
Derek Hsieh and Biren Reddy controlled their match at No. 3 doubles with an 8-1 victory. Jack Wong and Pat Otero, playing at No. 2 doubles, secured a hard-fought win 8-7, 7-3 in the tiebreak.
In singles, Hsieh and Emil Grantcharov won at Nos. 2 and 3, respectively, in straight sets. Marek Michulka defeated his opponent 6-4, 6-3 at the sixth singles slot to clinch the win for UChicago.
