UChicago Downs Grinnell to Advance to NCAA Third Round

From University of Chicago Athletics

University of Chicago's ninth-ranked men's tennis program defeated Grinnell College 5-2 in the second round of the 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Tennis Championship, hosted by Gustavus Adolphus.

After a first-round bye, UChicago took on Grinnell and erased a 2-1 deficit after doubles to advance to tomorrow's third and final regional round. The winner of the Maroons' matchup with host Gustavus Adolphus will advance to the final eight of the NCAA Championship, of which will take place in Lake Nona, Fla. from May 13-16.

The Maroons' top pairing of Andrei Leonov and Derek Hsieh won 8-4, but losses at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles put UChicago behind headed into the singles competition. The Maroons righted the ship in singles, however, winning 4-of-6 matches with the other two going unfinished to clinch the 5-2 win.

In singles, Emil Grantcharov nearly blanked his opponent at No. 3, winning 6-0, 6-1. Pat Otero, in Chicago's fifth spot, also won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Arjun Asokumar and Sachin Das battled back from a doubles defeat to win both of their matches at Nos. 1 and 4, respectively.

Asokumar won 6-3, 6-0 while Das provided the clinching point with a 6-2, 6-3 result.
