Maroons Place Sixth at Wheaton Invitational

The University of Chicago wrestling team put five wrestlers on the podium and finished sixth in the team standings at Wheaton College's Pete Willson Invitational on Saturday.

North Central College won the overall title in the 33-team field at the nation's largest and oldest small-college wrestling tournament.

Cole Fibranz kept his momentum rolling all the way into the championship match at 285 pounds. The Maroon heavyweight took down North Central College 2-1 in the semifinals before meeting the top overall seed from Ferrum College in the finals. The title match went to overtime before Fibranz was defeated by an 8-6 score. He finished the weekend with a 4-1 record.  

Ryan Fleck ultimately took fourth place at 149 pounds. He went 1-2 on the day, including an 8-2 win in the consolation bracket. At 165 pounds, Darian Estevez ended up sixth overall in his bracket.

In the 157-pound consolation draw, Drew Vlasnik started the day with a 9-0 win, followed by a 6-4 loss. He captured seventh place via medical forfeit.

Sean Conway rounded out the podium finishers. The Maroon 133-pounder posted a 2-1 record on the afternoon, which included clutch 6-5 and 3-2 victories to place seventh at his weight class.
