Late Goal Pushes WashU Past St. Catherine in First Round of NCAA Tournament

The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team defeated St. Catherine, 2-1, in double overtime in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Wartburg.

With less than three minutes remaining in the second overtime, first-year Grace Ehlert was the hero of the day, scoring on a pass from Jess Greven to secure the win for the Bears.
 
WashU got on the board first just 9:45 in, as senior Riley Alvarez scored on a pass from Maggie Brett. The goal marks Alvarez's third of the season and Brett's sixth assist.
 
St. Catherine came back to tie things up in the 26th minute as Sofia Campbell scored on a pass from Amanda Elton.
 
Play was relatively even, as WashU registered 14 shots to St. Catherine's 13. Eight of the Bears' shots were on target while five of St. Catherine's were. The Wildcats had the edge in corner kicks, 7-6.
 
Greven led the Bears with three shots and two on goal with an assist in 88 minutes of play. Ella Koleno and Ellie Brauner each registered two total shots with one on goal.
 
Junior goalkeeper Sidney Conner made four saves, playing all 110 minutes for the Bears.
 
WashU is now 9-5-6 on the year and will play Wartburg for the sixth time in program history tomorrow. The Bears lead the all-time series 5-0 and the teams last met in 2015 in the Sweet 16.
