WashU Women's Soccer Advances to Sweet 16 With Win Over Wartburg

From Washington University Athletics

The Washington University in St. Louis women's soccer team defeated Wartburg, 3-1, on Sunday afternoon to advance to the Sweet 16 to face UAA foe Carnegie Mellon. It's 16th trip to the Sweet 16 in program history.

Senior Maggie Brett put the Bears on the board first with a goal 19:56 in for her 11th goal of the year.

The Knights evened things up in the 33rd minute as Gabby Corday put in a pass from Joy Smith.

The first-half scoring wasn't done, however, as sophomore Meryl McKenna gave WashU a lead again with what would be the game-winning goal in the 38th minute.

Brett added an insurance goal for WashU in the 56th minute for her team-leading 12th goal of the year. She now has 30 points on the season.

WashU outshot Wartburg 16-13 with nine shots on goal to the Knights' four, but Wartburg had nine corner kicks to the Bears' four.

Junior goalkeeper Sidney Conner made three saves on the day, starting with a Lauren Kirkle shot in the 14th minute. Conner stopped a shot by Corday in the 40th minute and saved Smith's shot in the 76th minute to preserve the win for the Bears.

WashU is 11-5 all-time in the Sweet 16.
