Judges Net Two in Second Half to Top Fitchburg State

Judges Net Two in Second Half to Top Fitchburg State

From Brandeis University Athletics

After a dominating but scoreless first half, the Brandeis University women's soccer scored twice in the first 20 minutes of the second period to earn their first win of the season, a 2-0 result over Fitchburg State University in a non-conference contest on Gordon Field.
TEAM RECORDS

  • Brandeis: 1-0-1.
  • Fitchburg State: 1-1-0.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Judges outshot Fitchburg State for the game, 45-0. 26 of those shots came in the first half, but the Judges were unable to get one past FSU keeper Madison Dawkins, who made seven stops. The Judges also hit the woodwork twice.
  • Dawkins' best saves came in the 23rd minute, when she denied an initial shot by senior Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J./Oak Knoll) and sophomore Madison Sansone (Westport, Conn./Staples) on the ensuing rebound.
  • Brandeis finally solved Dawkins 1:24 into the second half. The Judges worked the ball around the box after a corner kick. Sansone took the ball at the left edge of the 18-yard box and fed it to senior Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) near the goalie box. Lenhart then tucked it under a diving Dawkins for her first goal of the season.
  • The Judges successfully converted directly off a corner kick in the 66th minute for their insurance goal. Senior Rachel Watler (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) sent the set piece into the box, where first-year midfielder Zareena Mann (San Ramon, Calif./California) touched it to sophomore back Elspeth Harker (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./The Albany Academies for Girls), who again beat a diving Dawkins to double the lead.
  • The Judges's two goalies, junior Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla. NSU/University School) and rookie Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) were not tested in goal, with Logan getting a couple of touches late in the second half.
  • Dawkins stood on her head with 13 saves for the Falcons to keep them in the contest.

BEYOND THE BOX SCORE

  • Harker scored for the second game in a row, the first two goals of her career.
  • Lenhart's goal was the 10th of her career. It was the fifth game-winner of her career.
  • This was the first-ever meeting between Brandeis and Fitchburg State in women's soccer.
